Cieran found himself making his way back into the room that housed their crime board. Detective Keogan was there, typing away at his laptop, and when he saw the dark-haired detective, a grin broke out on his face. The man clearly had been about to start talking his ear off, but Cieran silenced him with the raise of his hand.

The man couldn’t talk to Keogan, not at that moment after everything he had just gone through with both Fraser and Detective Hunter. All he needed to do was work on the case in front of him.

He had to fill out paperwork to try to justify every little decision that he had made over the course of the day. It was an impossible task considering the fact that even he didn’t truly understand the reasons he did certain things that day. So, Detective Black tossed the stack of papers aside and walked over to the crime board.

He looked at all the clues that they had gathered, all the connections that had been made, and he tried to come up with a theory. But no matter how hard he thought about the day, who he had spoken to, and what he had learned, his mind still remained perfectly blank.

The hours slipped by, and at some point, Detective Keogan must have left the room because when Cieran eventually looked away from the crime board and out of the window, he noticed that it was dark outside, and he was standing all alone in the conference room. He checked his phone to see that the time was well past eleven at night. Some of his teammates had left him text messages and emails, and Detective Keogan had even left him a voicemail.

Most of the messages read that they were turning in for the night and would meet with him the following day to go over what they had found. Another text message told him which hotel he was staying at, which room number, and an update about Jamie Carter, claiming that the man had calmed down considerably and was eager to return to the oil rig tomorrow.

According to Keogan’s voicemail, no member of the Major Investigation Team wanted to disturb him. He must have seemed deep in thought like he was cracking the case wide open, so they decided to leave him to his process. Little did they know that in however many hours had passed, the lead detective had done exactly zero work. He just stared blankly at the crime board, waiting for the mystery of Leon Crawford’s murder to solve itself.

Cieran rubbed at his eyes and decided that he, too, should turn in for the night, that there was no point in staying awake if there was nothing he could contribute to the case. Perhaps coming back to it with fresh eyes in the morning would be for the best.

Lucky for him, the hotel was close enough to the police station that he wouldn’t have to call another taxi. He could walk the short distance.
