Chapter 10
âI think my feet are starting to swell.â Franny leaned over her own belly to look at her sparkling slippers.
âWe should get you home,â said Alice, checking the time on her phone. âItâs only seven-thirty, but itâs been a long, busy day.â
âThe faire goes on until midnight,â said Franny. âAre you sure you donât want to stay longer?â
âItâll be way more fun at your house,â said Owen. âWe can check on Poppy and Finn, and then go sit out on the dock and enjoy this beautiful spring evening.â
âThat sounds like heaven,â said Franny, breathing a sigh of relief.
As the three friends began the short walk from the clearing to Ben and Frannyâs lake house, Alice spotted Jake Shannon, walking through the trees as though he was headed home, as well. Alice told Owen and Franny to hold up a second, and she jogged over to Jake.
âWhereâs your horse?â she called.
âWhat? Oh, hi, Alice,â Jake said. âThe wranglers came and transported the horses back out to the farm. Iâm headed home to my family.â He jingled his keys and nodded toward the parking area, where heâd apparently left his car earlier in the day.
âDidnât Holly and the kids come to the faire?â
âOh, yes,â he said with a smile. âThey had a great time. But you know how it is with little ones. Holly took them home to get them ready for bed.â
âDid you, um, decide to call Ben and Luke, by the way? Or talk to Dewey? About whatever was worrying you?â Alice couldnât think of a subtle way to ask, so she just came out with it.
âNo,â Jake said, looking worried. âBut theyâre coming home tomorrow, right?â
By this time, Owen and Franny had walked over and joined them.
âThey should be,â said Franny.
Alice took a step closer to Jake. âJake, something has clearly upset you. Is there anything we can do to help?â
Jake looked from Alice, to Owen, to Franny, and finally sighed and said, âIâd like to show you something.â
Everyone automatically stepped closer still, as Jake scrolled through photos on his phone, finally stopping at one and pausing before showing the others.
âWhatâwhoâis that?â Owen said, frowning.
âIt looks familiar.â Franny squinted at the photo.
âThatâs because we just saw it last night,â said Alice, looking back up at Jake. âThatâs Damon Huxley. After he was killed.â
âAnd obviously before the police and ambulance came,â said Owen, his eyes widening at the realization of what they were seeing.
âThatâs correct,â said Jake. âMayor Abercrombie took this photo.â
âSick!â said Owen, then quickly cleared his throat and added, âI mean, what an odd choice of subjects for a photo.â
âDoesnât bode well, does it.â Jake said this more as a statement than a question.
âWe saw the mayor there last night,â Alice said. âHe looked . . . sort of . . . smug?â
âHe felt sort of smug,â Jake admitted. âHeâd just taken a picture of what he thought was a drunk, passed-out Damon Huxley.â
âWhy would he do that?â asked Franny.
âDid you read yesterdayâs paper?â asked Jake.
âThat editorial Damon wrote? Yep,â said Alice.
