Creed was already onto his second cup of coffee and Danish as Boston-Wright entered the Qantas Club Lounge at Coolangatta Airport. It was her first time in a member’s only lounge and she felt an air of importance as she flashed her entry card to the receptionist on her way in. The lounge was busy with a mix of businesspeople and holiday makers as Boston-Wright made her way past the buffet, through the maze of tables and tub chairs to Creed, who had positioned himself in a prime window setting with commanding views over the tarmac.

“Good morning, Boston-Wright. Help yourself to the buffet. We’re boarding in half an hour. Tony, the barista, makes a great cappuccino. Think you could grab me another?” Creed returned to the Financial Review, barely giving Boston-Wright a moment to put down her bag and settle. A roll of her eyes was completely wasted on Creed, who was now immersed in the latest corporate happenings on page three.

Boston-Wright walked over to the buffet. She couldn’t believe the selection of fresh fruit, yoghurt, cereals and Danish pastries. The fresh strawberry yoghurt and a croissant looked tempting as she put them onto a plate and made her way to Tony to place her coffee orders.

She had barely sat down when the attendant made the first boarding call for their flight to Sydney. Boston-Wright quickly spooned up some yoghurt while cursing Creed under her breath for making her hurry her breakfast. Creed was oblivious to her angst and just kept on reading his paper, in no rush to join the boarding queue.

Ten minutes later, they were both relaxing in their seats, climbing to a cruising altitude of 30,000 feet and heading southbound to Sydney. Creed had donned his headset and was fumbling on the armrest as he searched for the rock music channel and volume controls. Boston-Wright placed a pillow against the window and tried to get some shuteye. There was obviously going to be little or no conversation on this flight but that suited her. She had a restless night’s sleep and craved a few winks.

Creed continued to fidget, pressing the controls on the dividing armrest and popping his headset on and off, giving Boston-Wright little opportunity to sleep. She finally gave up and was thankful when the air hostess arrived with a muffin and coffee.

“So, sir, do you think we’ll get any closer with Mick Talbot being our man?” she asked, although not in a confirming way.

Creed gave her a look as to why she doubted that Talbot was their man. He pulled the inflight magazine out of the seat pocket and started thumbing through it without responding to Boston-Wright.

An hour and ten minutes later, their flight landed in Sydney. Creed and Boston-Wright were exiting the terminal and climbing into a taxi, heading to their hotel.

“The Holiday Inn, Potts Point,” Creed instructed the turban-wearing, Indian taxi driver, who gave Creed a wry smile as he changed lanes without indicating and passed through the traffic lights while turning red.
