Chapter 11
âOkay, you two. Spill it.â
Alice had come home from Benâs to find Owen and Franny in the garden, huddled around Owenâs laptop.
âWhat?â asked Franny, a look of wide-eyed innocence on her face.
âNice try, with the doe eyes there, Franny, but Iâm on to you. What are you up to? I know you, and I know youâd never miss a lakeside feast from the Smiling Hound for nothing. And spending time with Ben. I had to eat extra onion rings, and now Iâm all bloated.â Alice turned to look Owen in the eye. âOut with it, Owen.â
âDonât give me your stink eye, Alice. My lips are sealed.â
âSo, you admit youâre hiding something!â said Alice, pointing an accusing finger at Owen.
When neither Franny nor Owen responded, Alice crossed her arms and said, âFine. Donât tell me, then.â
âIf you must know, weâre working on a project,â said Franny.
âFranny!â said Owen.
âI canât help it!â said Franny. âI canât handle Aliceâs stink eye!â
âGo on,â said Alice, trying to intensify her glare.
âThatâs right!â said Owen, putting an arm around Franny. âWeâre working on a small project!â
âWhat kind of project?â
âNever mind,â said Owen. âWeâll tell you tomorrow. Meanwhile, donât you want to hear what we found out from studying Alexandraâs blog?â
This caught Aliceâs full attention. âYou learned something new?â
âWeâll show you,â said Franny, scooting over so Alice could sit.
âAlso, weâve been waiting for you to get here so we could try these beauties,â said Owen, opening a bakery box with six tiny cakes inside. âI see no reason why we shouldnât sample a couple of prospective wedding cakes while we fill you in. Weâll start with pumpkin-caramel-cinnamon.â
âHow am I going to fit any more food into my stomach tonight?â asked Alice with a groan. âIâm serious. On Monday morning, weâre turning over a new leaf! Extra miles and clean eating!â
âJust try a bite,â said Owen.
âMmm. Tastes like fall,â said Franny, taking a bite and getting a smear of frosting on her nose.
âThat frosting on your nose is a maple chai buttercream,â said Owen, biting into his own cake.
âItâs so comforting,â said Alice. âSo warm.â
But Owen frowned. âNope, this isnât it,â he said.
âOwen, youâre being entirely too picky. All of these cakes have been outstanding,â said Alice.
âOkay, look here,â said Franny, scrolling through the Alexandraâs Adventures archives. âHereâs an entry dated a year ago this week. Alexandra writes about what she carries in her purse.â
âWhatâs in my bag,â Owen said, rolling his eyes. âI mean, like weâre really going to believe she carries around a stethoscope in that five-thousand-dollar designer purse!â
Alice marveled at the professional-quality of the photos, which featured a buttery leather purse, its contents scattered about and surprisingly color-coordinated.
âShe made it look like the purse just spilled open,â said Franny. âBut the irony is, she probably took an hour to arrange it exactly the way she wanted it.â
âI bet,â said Alice. âI mean, the way that pack of bubble gum is just casually lying on her open passport so we can see that sheâs been all over the world, apparently while chewing gum, andâoh.
