My goodness,â Sarahâs mother said when they were well away from the Norcross home, walking toward the nearest avenue to find a cab. âI realize I donât know Greta Norcross very well, but I never expected her to behave like that.â
âPerhaps sheâs just being protective. Sheâs lost both of her children in horrible ways. We canât blame her for wanting to keep Violet and the baby safe, can we?â
âI donât suppose we can, but sheâs so . . . Iâm not sure I can even describe her behavior. She was so adamant that Violet come to live with them.â
âDid you find that odd, too?â
âI certainly did. Iâve never liked Isabel Andriessen very much, and from what you told me, they werenât particularly kind to Violet when they found out about the baby, so I suppose Violet might not want to go back to them, but for Greta to absolutely insist on taking her . . .â She shook her head in wonder.
âWhat disturbed me was how Mrs. Norcross said she would protect them, but with Hayden dead, Iâm not sure they need protection anymore.â
âI didnât think of that,â her mother said, âbut youâre right.â
They had reached the avenue and Mrs. Decker signaled for a cab. When they had engaged one and were heading to the Decker house, her mother said, âIâm sorry we didnât get to discuss the Tarletons, but I couldnât think of a way to bring it up with Violet there.â
âNeither could I, but maybe I can see Mrs. Tarleton again. She seemed very eager to criticize Mrs. Norcross, and she might tell me even more with a little encouragement. She doesnât seem to mind at all that weâre investigating Haydenâs death.â
âWhich reminds me, why didnât you want Greta to know that Bram isnât the one who hired Frank?â
âBecause what I said is true, a private investigator doesnât reveal the name of his client.â
âBut you didnât have to reveal the real clientâs name, just admit it wasnât Bram.â
Sarah shrugged. âHonestly, I thought she might be more cooperative if she believed he was working for her husband.â
âI see. Do you think she was?â
âOddly, no. She actually seemed to be less cooperative after that, and more determined than ever to protect Violet.â
âThatâs too bad, I guess, but sheâll find out soon enough that Bram didnât hire Frank.â
âHow can you be sure?â
âBecause sheâll most certainly confront Bram when he gets home, and heâll tell her.â
âYouâre probably right.â Sarah considered the situation for a moment. âI wonder who started the rumors about Hayden having a woman in his office the night he was killed.â
âYou heard Violet. It was some women at the funeral.â
âBut they couldnât have known about it unless they heard it somewhere else. It certainly wasnât in the newspapers, and not many people at the firm knew about it. One of them must have spread the word.â
âOr at least told one other person, which is usually all it takes for a story like that to get started.
