My goodness,” Sarah’s mother said when they were well away from the Norcross home, walking toward the nearest avenue to find a cab. “I realize I don’t know Greta Norcross very well, but I never expected her to behave like that.”

“Perhaps she’s just being protective. She’s lost both of her children in horrible ways. We can’t blame her for wanting to keep Violet and the baby safe, can we?”

“I don’t suppose we can, but she’s so . . . I’m not sure I can even describe her behavior. She was so adamant that Violet come to live with them.”

“Did you find that odd, too?”

“I certainly did. I’ve never liked Isabel Andriessen very much, and from what you told me, they weren’t particularly kind to Violet when they found out about the baby, so I suppose Violet might not want to go back to them, but for Greta to absolutely insist on taking her . . .” She shook her head in wonder.

“What disturbed me was how Mrs. Norcross said she would protect them, but with Hayden dead, I’m not sure they need protection anymore.”

“I didn’t think of that,” her mother said, “but you’re right.”

They had reached the avenue and Mrs. Decker signaled for a cab. When they had engaged one and were heading to the Decker house, her mother said, “I’m sorry we didn’t get to discuss the Tarletons, but I couldn’t think of a way to bring it up with Violet there.”

“Neither could I, but maybe I can see Mrs. Tarleton again. She seemed very eager to criticize Mrs. Norcross, and she might tell me even more with a little encouragement. She doesn’t seem to mind at all that we’re investigating Hayden’s death.”

“Which reminds me, why didn’t you want Greta to know that Bram isn’t the one who hired Frank?”

“Because what I said is true, a private investigator doesn’t reveal the name of his client.”

“But you didn’t have to reveal the real client’s name, just admit it wasn’t Bram.”

Sarah shrugged. “Honestly, I thought she might be more cooperative if she believed he was working for her husband.”

“I see. Do you think she was?”

“Oddly, no. She actually seemed to be less cooperative after that, and more determined than ever to protect Violet.”

“That’s too bad, I guess, but she’ll find out soon enough that Bram didn’t hire Frank.”

“How can you be sure?”

“Because she’ll most certainly confront Bram when he gets home, and he’ll tell her.”

“You’re probably right.” Sarah considered the situation for a moment. “I wonder who started the rumors about Hayden having a woman in his office the night he was killed.”

“You heard Violet. It was some women at the funeral.”

“But they couldn’t have known about it unless they heard it somewhere else. It certainly wasn’t in the newspapers, and not many people at the firm knew about it. One of them must have spread the word.”

“Or at least told one other person, which is usually all it takes for a story like that to get started.
