Chapter 5

Arnold Foyle pushed aside tins of nails and tools and finally saw what he wanted. He pried open the small can of black paint, found a paint brush in a dusty box and walked out to his car. Looking around to make sure he was alone, he dabbed some paint on the red streak on the hood beside a deep dent. Satisfied that the paint would dry in the hot sun, he replaced the paint in the shed, and sat in a garden chair.

Larry and Angela got Olivia from the Tadpole and walked to the top of the beach cliff. Sure enough, Angela’s store, small beach and garden could be seen from the vantage point.

“So, you saw somebody or something up here from the beach?” asked Larry.

“Yes, and something flashed in my eyes from up here.”

“A bike maybe?”

“Possibly.” Angela walked along the cliff top behind the barrier and looked at the ground. There were shoe prints, paw prints and bike tire track. Then she saw something different. “Larry, look at this. There are two really fat tire tracks here. What could that be ‘cause it’s not a bike?”

Larry looked at the tracks at his feet. “You can see that the rear tires are also fat when the machine turned,” he murmured.

“How about a motorized scooter or wheelchair? They have fat tires in front and in the back for stability,” suggested Angela. “Who do we know who drives one of them in town?”

“Well, there Mrs. Prosser but hers is just a push model with skinny tires. How about that Grant Ewing guy? I think he lives over on Grove Crescent. He’s a member of the Heritage Society but would not have been able to get to the beach. Maybe he was up here on the day of the ceremony.”

The trio walked back towards town and decided to visit Mr. Ewing. It was Larry who noticed Arnold Foyle sitting in his lawn chair.

“Hi there Arnold,” he called as the man awoke with a start.

“Oh, hi,” came the unenthusiastic reply.

Angela noticed that as he got to his feet his eyes went towards the small black car parked in the driveway. She also noticed that Olivia had her small black nose in the air and was sniffing something. She smelt it too. Paint.

“Nice afternoon to relax.”

“It will be if you two don’t bug me anymore.”

“Just being friendly,” replied Larry taking Angela’s arm.

“That was interesting,” said Angela as they continued their walk. “I smelled fresh paint back there and when I looked there was a shiny spot beside a dent in Arnold’s car. I’ll bet you that he was the man who hit Hector the other night.”

“Hector would be wise to find another job.”

Mr. Grant Ewing was enjoying the sunshine in his flower garden. He recognized them from the Heritage Society and then made a particular fuss over Olivia. “Lovely wee doggie,” he said in a thick Scottish accent, “now, what can I help you with?”

“Mr. Ewing,” asked Angela, “by any chance were you
