Chapter 24

Thursday, June 14, 2001

Damien sat with his back against the wall. Sitting here, outside of the abandoned factory, watching trains roll by on their way west was one of his favorite pastimes. He’d done this countless times before but this would be his last evening of watching the trains. After tonight, he would begin to implement the plans he’d been making. Tonight was the first step towards the revenge he so desperately wanted.

Damien’s life until now had been a living hell. His mother died when he was 14 months old. She killed herself with a massive overdose of heroin. He was taken in by his great aunt. Together, they lived in a run-down tenement in North Central Philadelphia.

As a child, he had learned early that he was smarter than all the other kids. He could always get them to do what he wanted. The few who didn’t see things his way had ‘accidents.’ He learned that inflicting pain, whether physical or mental, got people to do what he wanted them to do. Damien had no compunction about causing pain in others.

He remembered the last day in High School, two months before. His great aunt sat in the office with Damien, Principal Andrews and the school cop Jenkins. His aunt kept telling Principal Andrews that she didn’t understand. Andrews had tried to explain that he was expelling Damien to protect the other students and the faculty. He told her of the instances of bullying, physical abuse and threats, not just of other students but, in two cases, threats to faculty members.

The final straw had been at the home of one of Damien’s teachers. The woman had given him a failing grade. That night when she got home, she found her cat on the back stoop of her row house. The animal had been dissected. Only the head was left intact. Beneath the cat’s body was a single piece of paper with a large ‘F’ in red ink; the ‘F’ had a circle around it. The teacher knew Damien was responsible.

He could see the principal’s face as he’d said, “Your nephew has exhibited all of the textbook tendencies and behaviors of a sociopath, Ms. Hernandez. The boy needs help, and we’re not equipped to provide it. You should take him to a hospital where they may be able to treat him properly. But for the sake of this school, he cannot be allowed to continue here. Understand this, Mister Hernandez, should you set foot on school property again, you will be arrested and prosecuted.”

Damien was furious. After getting home with his great aunt, he immediately went out again. He went to the local library and looked up the word ‘sociopath.’ It means a person with a personality disorder manifesting itself in extreme antisocial attitudes and behavior, and a lack of conscience. When he read that description, he laughed out loud. It fit him perfectly.

He pushed himself up from the wall and looked at his old Timex. It was nearing 9:00 PM. The passenger train would be passing at 9:50 tonight.
