THE LOBBY was empty when we entered the inn. Landon and I headed straight for the dining room. It was after breakfast but before lunch, so I found my mother and aunts exactly where I expected them to be, sipping coffee and hanging around the dining room table gossiping.
âWe have a problem,â I announced.
âOh, well, I wasnât sure you were still alive,â Mom drawled, ignoring my call to action. âWe cleaned the room yesterday â and you guys had clearly been inside â but when we cleaned this morning we found that you hadnât slept in the bed.â
âIâm sorry,â Landon offered. âWe got caught up and stayed at the Bayside Bed and Breakfast.â
âA competing inn?â A horrified Twila clapped a hand over her mouth.
âThe dead womanâs mother owns it. We had hoped to find some information,â Landon explained.
âDid you?â Marnie asked.
âWell, I technically stole mail and Bay stole some sort of book in an envelope that we still havenât looked at, so I canât answer that just yet,â Landon replied. âThe day is still young, though.â
âAnd yet I feel old,â Mom muttered, never moving her gaze from my face. âWhy didnât you call?â
âI ⦠.â Crap. This was the last thing I needed. My plate was already overflowing â and with mostly my least favorite foods. Weâre talking cooked carrots, guacamole and hummus here.
âItâs not her fault.â Landon immediately jumped to my defense. âWe made the decision to stay there on the fly. We ran to Target to pick up new things. If you want to blame someone, blame me.â
âOh, I blame you for quite a lot these days,â Mom shot back. âI just ⦠Iâm not really happy with you right now Landon.â
âMom ⦠.â
Landon held up a hand to quiet whatever I was about to say. âYour mother has a right to let me know how she feels.â
âOh, well, thank you for your permission, Landon,â Mom deadpanned, her eyes flashing. âDo you have any idea what you put us through when you decided to go undercover and left Bay floundering for a month?â
âI didnât mean to hurt her,â Landon offered, keeping his voice low and even. âThat was the last thing I wanted. I missed her so much ⦠but my boss and I came to an understanding that if I did this job I would probably get a promotion and be taken out of the running for other undercover operations.â
Mom stilled, the admission clearly surprising her. âOh. I ⦠did you tell Bay?â
âNo, and that was a mistake,â Landon said. âI wanted to surprise her. I wanted to make a big deal out of it.â
âThatâs kind of sweet.â Twila sighed as she topped off her coffee. âI knew you couldnât be the tool Aunt Tillie kept accusing you of being.â
âThatâs possibly very flattering,â Landon said, although he kept his gaze on Mom. âWinnie, you know I wouldnât hurt Bay for anything, right? I didnât mean for this to spiral so far out of control. This wasnât what I had planned.
