Chapter 19

The next morning, Susan woke to the sound of her phone vibrating on the coffee table next to the sofa bed. She reached for her glasses and looked at the screen.

“Madison?”

“Hey, guess what? I got into Harold’s phone. He used the same pin for everything. Anyhow, I saw a Chicago number. It looks like this person was rather persistent. Eleven calls. The last call was made the day he left St. Louis to come home.”

“Excellent. Let me get something to write with.” She grabbed her purse and pulled out the notebook she carried around with her. “I’m ready.” She copied down the number.

“Do you think this so called daughter of his killed him?”

“I don’t know. If she felt she was entitled to a share of the company and Harold refused to recognize her as his daughter, I can see how she’d have a motive.”

“But what about Coach Cullins? She’d have to have flown to New York last week. And what was her motive there?”

“I don’t know. Maybe she suspected he was the silent partner. She hoped to convince him she had a right to a stake in the company and he refused. I’m surprised she hasn’t approached you.”

“Perhaps she didn’t want to come forward as his daughter or she didn’t realize I’d be inheriting part of the company. Did she even know he died?”

“I’ll try to get some answers. I’ll talk to you after I talk to Janalyn.”

“Good luck. And thanks for doing this. I have nightmares every night about the murder. I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep until someone is behind bars.”

After she put down the phone, Valerie walked in. “Was that Mike?”

“No. Madison called back with Janalyn’s phone number and I’ve got it right here.” She waved her notebook. “Let’s give it a whirl.”

“Hang on. What are you going to say? We think you killed Harold Chambers?”

“We could pretend to be lawyers and say we need to see her about her inheritance. That would get her attention.”

“Boy, you sure can lie like a rug. I think we should think this through. Maybe do a little investigating before we talk to her. Besides, it’s early. She may still be asleep.”

“Madison was up.”

“It’s an hour later in New York. Don’t forget we’re on central time.”

“Do you think Jazzy will help us?”

“She’ll say to mind our own business. But…there’s someone I think will help us. He was a friend of my husband. He liked my blueberry muffins. Anyway, he worked in Jazzy’s precinct, then retired and started a small bond chaser business. He might help us with a background check.”

“Do you have his number?”

“I’m sure I do.”

“What are you waiting for?”

“Again, it’s early. I’ll make us some breakfast, then we’ll call.”

Valerie whipped up a batch of French toast. “I got this recipe from The Lazy Vegetarian. It uses vanilla almond milk in the batter. Gives it some sweetness.”

“It’s delicious. I’ll make this for Mike.”

“I have a feeling he’s going to be suspicious of your cooking since the beet chili.
