Chapter Thirty-Three

“Thanks for the tip last night,” Elven said to Madds.

She sat at her desk, still not fully settled in to her space. She had a mishmash of items on her desk, like she was deciding the best way to set it up. She’d been there for only a short period of time and had come from such a different place. Her organizational skills would come with time, he hoped. Worst case, he could give her a few pointers. After all, he had cleaned up Lester’s mess, and that was years’ worth of case files.

There were a few boxes that needed unpacking and a stack of papers at the corner of her desk. It was a cakewalk compared to what he had done with Lester’s office.

“What?” Madds asked, looking up at him.

“You told me Jesse had been at the bar with Hollis the other night. He was there again. I had a few words.”

“Oh,” she said, her eyes going vacant.

“So I was saying thanks,” Elven said, shifting his weight back and forth. Madds seemed a little off.

“Yeah, of course,” she said.

“Everything okay?” Elven asked.

“Of course, why wouldn’t it be?”

He shrugged. “Just checking. You seem a bit off.”

“Guess I had a bit of a long night,” she said.

“Fair enough,” he said.

“You know, you’re a good boss,” Madds said. “Sorry if I was whatever before, I mean.”

He cocked his head and watched her carefully. “Whatever before? You mean, angry with me and letting me know?”

“Yup.”

“No problem. Oh, and I know I am a good boss.” He smiled wide and winked at her. She did not return the smile. “You sure you’re okay?”

Madds bit her lip, like she was contemplating something. “You ever feel like you’re not in the right place?”

Elven considered the question and leaned against the doorway. “There’s lots of times I feel that way. But when I do, I usually try to carve myself a spot to call my own. Is something on your mind?”

Madds looked like she was about to say something. Something in her eyes told him that not everything was alright with her. But then Meredith called out to him from the lobby.

“Elven, someone’s here to see you,” she said.

Elven turned and looked down the hall, then back to Madds. “Hold that thought, will you?”

Madds smiled and nodded. “Go ahead.”

Elven walked down the hall, wondering what was going on with Madds. Maybe she was still beating herself up for how things had ended with the Sophia case. It was she who had been on duty, and he knew he would have blamed himself if it had ended the way it did for her, no matter how many times someone had said it wasn’t his fault.

But he’d have to find out later. When he set foot in the lobby, he saw that Jesse Parsons stood in front of Meredith’s desk in full uniform.

“Wow. To what do I owe the pleasure?” Elven asked.

“You told me to come by, didn’t you?” Jesse asked.

“I’d say you’re a few days late. But I suppose a guy like you doesn’t understand timing, just like he doesn’t understand courtesy.
