Chapter 11
When I opened the door, DC Smith was stood on my doorstep looking official.
"Cara, I'm sorry to do this, but we need you to come down the station."
âWhat? I mean, of course. What is this about?â
"Another body has been found, and we have reason to believe that you might be able to help us with our enquiries. We can do this the quiet way, orâ¦"
âWho? When?â
âIâm not at liberty to say right now.â
âReally? This is how you want to do things? Fine. I just need to sort out someone to look after Shadow.â
I put in a quick call to Caz. I didn't tell her why I needed someone to come and check on Shadow, and she was gracious enough to not ask. Maybe there was a rumour mill running already. After all, I'm sure someone had spotted DC Smith on my doorstep by now.
As I stepped into the back of the car, I realised that I still had no idea whether Aaron's mum had contacted the police yet about Aaron finding Craig's body. My plan was to visit her today, especially after seeing Aaron yesterday, but it was too late now. That left me in a dilemma. The last thing I wanted to do was drop her or Aaron in it, but equally, I couldn't sit there and withhold information or lie. What if they already knew that I knew? I had done nothing wrong, and yet my stress levels were rising. And whose body had been found? Clearly, it was someone I knew. There was nothing for it. I would have to be honest, and then as soon as I got out of the police station, I could head to Maggie's and apologise. I was sure she'd understand.
When we pulled up at the station, I was taken straight into an interview room.
"DI Carroway will be with you shortly," said DC Smith as he left the room, closing the door behind him. Alex Carroway was someone I had come to know after the last few months. He had thanked me for my work on the murders of Melissa and Pete, and now, we often met up, particularly if a case was puzzling him. Usually, one of us had information that could help out the other â all off the record, of course. I felt a little better, knowing that he would be interviewing me.
The door opened and in walked DI Carroway. He was almost six foot tall, but somehow his presence never felt threatening. His blonde hair was brushed back, and above his ears, you could see where it was beginning to fade to almost white.
"Cara, I'm so sorry. It seems my DC was a little over-eager to please. You were never supposed to be brought in. We just need to talk to you about your movements yesterday."
"Oh, of course. For a moment there, I thought he was going to place me under arrest!"
âNo, no. Not at all. Iâm afraid another body has been found.â
âHe mentioned that. What is going on in Bwytheney?â
âNot on Bwytheney this time but Morsouin Isle.
