Back at the station after a fruitless search for the sniper, Ian sat at his desk drinking coffee and making out the report on the morning’s incident.

Incident. Since when did attempted murder become an incident? He gave the mug a disdainful sneer.

Erik and Sam came in. “Question,” Ian said before they’d gotten their jackets off. “Does the perp have a hard-on for all Cassell Springs lawmen or do they have a boner for me in particular?”

“You mean if one of us had gone on the call instead, would they have maybe gone home without trying anything?” Erik asked.

“They did ask for you in particular,” Sam said.

“Are you sure it was Marie Morley on the phone?” Ian asked.

After a second’s thought, Sam said, “No. Remember, I asked her if she’d caught a cold.”

“Definitely a woman?”

Erik shook his head. “Maybe someone trying to sound like a woman.”

“That really narrows things down.” Ian sipped his coffee. “So, thinking for a minute that they were after me in particular, that brings up something else. What’s the connection between me and Baker?” Ian leaned back in his chair and counted on his fingers. “We both got anonymous letters. We’re both chiefs. We’re…”

“Friends,” Sam said.

“Baker was friends with everyone,” Ian said.

“He was your best friend.”

“You think it’s related?”

Sam shrugged.

“It can’t be a grudge over something Baker did to them because killing Baker would have erased it.”

“Maybe by taking over Baker’s job, you inherited his anger.”

“Isn’t that kind of a stretch?” Sam said, dragging a chair to the middle of the room. He sat in the chair backwards, his forearms across the back.

“Maybe it’s an ongoing case. Baker got something on the guy and he thinks you’ll follow up on it,” Erik said.

“But Sam knows all the arrests, all the cases…” Ian began.

“And there’s damned few of ’em,” Sam interrupted.

“How’s the examination of the files coming?”

“Nothing so far.”

“I’m heading out to continue asking questions,” Erik said with a wistful glance at the file cabinets.

Ian rose. “Okay, good. I’m going home to check my crockpot for real this time. Sam, head over to the bank and talk to Marie. Find out what time she left this morning and all that. I’ll leave a message for the State Police, they’ll be here to pick up copies of the reports.”
