CHAPTER 14

“Oh, no,” Dani yelled as the kitchen door blew in from the strength of the blast. At the sound of the explosion, Arthur had pulled Dani towards him and the back wall, the door narrowly missing them.

“Arthur, what was it?”

“I’m afraid it was a bomb, and I have a bad feeling it was meant for you. Stay here while I go outside.”

People were running to the scene, and Arthur could hear the sound of sirens. Dani’s SUV was a twisted pile of smoking metal, and tragically, Hector had been killed as well. When Arthur ran to what was left of the car, he saw parts of it strewn all around the parking lot. There was no point in having the paramedics come. It was too late for Hector.

Arthur rushed over to the first police car to arrive and told the officer he suspected it was a bombing. He told them who he was, who his client was, and why he was sure that the bomb had been intended for her. Whoever had done it had rightly assumed that the car with the personalized license plate was hers.

It wasn’t the first time Arthur had dealt with the aftermath of a car bombing, and he’d carefully inspected the underside of her car just before they’d left her house. He knew someone had put the device underneath the car while they’d been inside cooking.

The event manager had been texted and as soon as she arrived, she walked up to Arthur and said, “Is Ms. Rosetti all right?”

“Yes. I told her to stay in the kitchen. I don’t think she needs to see either her car or Hector looking like this. Unfortunately, the strength of the explosion blew the kitchen door off its hinges. Can you get someone out tonight to fix it?”

“Yes. I have a complete list of people to call when we have emergencies. It will be fixed within the next couple of hours. I’ll stay until it is. I overheard you say that you think it was a bomb, and it was meant for Ms. Rosetti. Why?”

“I don’t know exactly. Although I am Dani’s sous-chef for her catering company, I’m also the head of a security company. Someone wants Dani dead. She had an attempt on her life yesterday, but I was hoping it was an isolated one. Obviously, it’s not.”

Just then a police detective walked up to Arthur. “Sir, I’m Detective Steiger. I’ll be in charge of this investigation, and I’d like to talk to you and Ms. Rosetti.”

“Certainly, Detective. Ms. Rosetti is in the kitchen. Let’s go in there.”

When he walked in, Arthur said, “Dani, this is Detective Steiger. He’s in charge and wants to talk to us.”

“Certainly, Detective. What would you like to know?”

“I’d like you to tell me what led up to this and what you know about it.”

Arthur looked at her and said, “Dani, why don’t you start with the poisoned candy from yesterday?”

Dani told the detective everything that had happened since she and Arthur had picked up Anna at the airport and concluded with hearing the explosion.
