Igrowled in frustration, pulling my phone from my pocket. When I saw it was Ben who was calling me, I raised a heavy brow in confusion.

“It’s Cattermole,” I muttered to Lylah.

Lylah’s confused expression mimicked my own. “Why would he be calling?”

“I dunno,” I said in annoyance. “I told him not to call unless...”

I stopped speaking and felt a cold shiver hit me. I’d told Ben not to call me unless he saw something suspicious. Ben may have been new to the role of a DC, but he’d been in the police long enough in his career to know you didn’t call someone during an interview unless it was important.

I hastily hit answer and put my mobile next to my ear. “Cattermole, what is it?” I asked urgently.

“Sir, I need help! I’ve been attacked!” Ben said fearfully.

I swore to myself, covered the phone, and quickly looked to Liam with a severe glare. “We have to go now, but I can assure you this is far from over and you will be seeing us again!” I said fiercely as I gestured with my head for Lylah to follow me.

Liam stood there in confusion, opening and closing his mouth repeatedly as though wanting to say something. Instead, he just gawped as Lylah and I quickly left the front door. Once I heard Lylah pull the door closed behind us, I spoke into my phone again and power walked away from Liam’s.

“What’s going on, Cattermole?” I asked hastily. “Where are you? Are you hurt?”

I heard Lylah gasp at my questions, but I ignored her. My focus was completely on the phone to make sure Ben was okay.

“I’m hurt, but I think I’m okay. Just get here as fast as you can!” Ben said anxiously.

I didn’t know exactly where Ben would be, but as the car wasn’t parked too far from Liam’s front door, I decided to move as though I were going back to it. However, no sooner had I exited Liam’s property and walked speedily toward the path, I saw Ben further along on the path’s floor looking a sorry sight. He held his right arm close to his chest, and I saw a small amount of blood dripping down it. With his left hand, he was holding the back of his head. I charged toward him, my thoughts running wild with what could have happened.

Lylah and I made it to Ben, and we both crouched down to look at him. Lylah politely pushed slightly in front of me so she could examine Ben’s head injury. Her face grew pale, and she looked worried as she started to examine it. As Lylah was in the way I couldn’t clearly see Ben’s head wound, but it was deep enough to leave blood on his hand.

“What happened?” I asked in a slow, shocked voice as I tried to take in the extent of his injuries.

Ben winced as Lylah touched near his head, but he allowed her to look.

“Sorry, Ben,” Lylah said sympathetically. “Just try to
