David Yates was nominally on duty at his office. But he had swiveled his chair around and rested his feet on the windowsill, so that he could gaze sightlessly out the window. Willard & Climpson paid an extravagant rental for that window because it embraced a wide view of the busy harbor.
Now, of course, the longshoremenâs strike had left the harbor moribund. The only sign of activity was from the sea gulls, swooping and squawking against the brilliant blue sky. Their outraged complaints rose and fell with melodic monotony. The strike had interfered with their way of life too, interrupting the steady supply of refuse that kept them sleek and shining.

At this point in his reflections, a spasm of irritation crossed his face. Most men, yes. But women were different. They positively liked being tied down. Remorselessly, his thoughts turned to his fiancée, Dorothy. Dorothy wanted to be tied down, and the sooner the better. What a time for her to turn on the heat for an early wedding! Little did she know! Yates shrugged Dorothy aside and began to dream of distant lands.
