After checking into the Granger Hotel & Restaurant and freshening up, Ben loaded Emily, Whitley, and the animals back into his truck and they drove over to Kayla Saunders’s house. She lived in a rustic cabin snuggled up on the side of a mountain not far from the road that would take them up to Camp Arapahoe.

Ben wasn’t sure where he had expected Kayla and Clark to have lived, but he was sure this wasn’t it. For a man who made his money doing construction and building large, upscale projects like ski resorts, he’d have expected them to have a bigger house.

Ben held Esmerelda, Emily held Cajun, and Whitley stood behind them both as he knocked on the front door. Kayla answered, wearing an apron over her fuzzy pink sweater, skinny jeans, and suede house boots. In casual clothes, she looked much younger and more fresh-faced than she had earlier in the day in her business suit. Ben found it much easier to see the young girl he and Clark had originally met all those years ago.

“Ben, Emily! I’m so glad you could make it. And perfect timing. Dinner’s almost ready.” Kayla and Emily exchanged a quick hug.

Ben leaned in, offering up a one-handed hug. “Thanks for the invite and thanks for not minding that we brought the kids.” As he stepped away, he held Esmerelda up.

“Oh, no problem at all. You can just let them run around. I put my dogs in the back room so they won’t bother us. They can have their run of the house.”

Ben scratched Esmerelda behind the ear. “You hear that? You’ve got the run of the house.”

“Yippee, exploring with the Energizer Bunny. Oughta be a blast,” snipped Esmerelda.

He bent down and put her on the floor, whispering in her ear. “Just be good!”

Emily put Cajun down too and the two of them took off like shots to go exploring. She stood up and smiled at Kayla’s house, which was quaintly decorated for Christmas. Live pine garland laced with white lights hung across the mantel over a roaring fire. There were an assortment of Christmas trees scattered around the house, each one uniquely decorated with its own theme. And in one corner, rustic logs had been sliced thin to create unique display shelves for Kayla’s Christmas village collection. Each level was lit by twinkle lights and decorated with live garland and fluffy white batting.

“Wow!” breathed Whitley as she spun around taking in every little detail. “This place is magical!”

Emily’s sparkling brown eyes showed how impressed she was with the place and the decorations, too. “You’ve got an adorable little cabin here.”

“Thank you,” said Kayla. “I haven’t been here long. I bought the place with my share of the divorce settlement. But I put my Christmas decorations up the first weekend I was here.”

Emily frowned. “I thought Clark said your divorce wasn’t final yet.”

“Oh, it’s not. He had to write me a check early,” she admitted. “So I could get my own place. But we’re signing the final papers next week.
