Chapter Nine

The Unexpected

The rain fell everywhere, and Alice opened up her umbrella cane and walked beneath it. The cats went on their way, most of them using their tails to try to cover as much of themselves as they could.

Sophie noticed with astonishment that Montgomery was stepping lightly; his tail straight up in the air, almost prancing and dancing as he went along. He had a smile on his face that was turned up to the sky and the rain.

“Montgomery! What has gotten into you?” She asked curiously as she shook her head and laughed.

Chippa smiled and held his paws out, upward and open to the rain as he let the raindrops soak into him. “‘Et’s healing… Clears the mind. ‘Liven’s the senses. ‘Et’s nature connecting ‘weth all of us and giving us what we needs.”

Tao lifted her face to the rain, as did Oscar, and even Jynx. Alice closed her umbrella and tucked it back under her arm, enjoying the droplets of water that found her. Bailey stuck his tongue out and tried to catch raindrops on it; tasting them as they walked. Sophie let it sprinkle all over her coat. She even nudged a few leaves to bring down some extra drops.

All of their brilliant colors and patterns came back to their fur as they left the White Song Forest and entered the Green Forest. Not long after that, they reached the clearing beside the pond where they would be spending the night, and Alice sank onto her wide leaf bed. She set her bag down on the ground beside her and Chippa guided one of the other wide leafs over her to keep her warm and dry.

The rainclouds drifted away, and the night sky above them was clear, and endlessly deep. The cats began to stretch and yawn; some of them finding a place to sleep. Marlowe curled up at the side of Alice’s leaf, and tucked his chin into his paws.

Oscar was still buzzing from all of the excitement of the day, and he wasn’t interested in sleeping. He went to the edge of the pond and looked into it, sniffing at the water and the growth of grasses and flowers around it.

He picked his head up and stared at the surface of the pond. “What are those shining lights in the water?” He asked as he tried to lean forward for a closer look.

Montgomery went to his side to see what he was talking about. Then he lifted his chin and looked up. “They’re stars in the night sky, and they’re being reflected in the pool below.”

Oscar looked up and discovered that the night sky was flooded with countless stars of nearly every color in many sizes. “Wow…” He sighed as he tried to take it all in. “I’ve never seen anything like that at home.” He said quietly and thoughtfully.

The stars above twinkled and danced just as much in the sky as they did in the water. Alice sighed and looked over at him.

“Well my dear Oscar, you don’t see them in London because there’s something called light pollution.
