“That must have been where that eyelash I thought was a ferocious insect came from.,” murmured Mr. Penguin. It was part of Jasper’s Precious Darling disguise.

Farooq continued, explaining how he’d sent Agent Eyeball to fetch Mr. Penguin, but Mr. Penguin had gone bonkers thinking that the cat was a cursed mummy. (At this Agent Eyeball looked VERY offended.)

Later, they had tiptoed into the carriage to try again to tell Mr. Penguin and Colin about it all, and they had seen Jasper Charade sneak up behind them and throw them from the train.

“Then we leaped off to rescue you!” said Farooq, and Agent Eyeball nodded.

Mr. Penguin sat down heavily.

So it had been Jasper Charade he’d heard earlier, talking about stealing something. But who had he been talking to?

“What I don’t understand is why Mr. Bland—I mean, Jasper Charade—was on the Pyramid Express? Do you think he just decided to ransack all the carriages to see what he could find?”

Colin shook his head and scribbled on his pad.

NO, it said.

BECAUSE IF SO HE WOULD HAVE NICKED ANYTHING VALUABLE

BUT HE

DIDN’T.

Farooq pushed his specs up his nose. “So he was definitely after that amulet,” he said. “It seems like he knew it was, or at least thought it MIGHT be, on the train.” Agent Eyeball nodded again.

For a moment everyone was silent. Everyone except Gordon, who was snoring as loudly as a fully grown hog. In the semi silence, everyone was thinking big thoughts.

It was Colin who spoke first.

I THINK EDITH HAD DISCOVERED ALL OF THIS, said Colin’s pad, and they all agreed. It did seem like Edith had been on the trail.

Had Jasper arranged to have Edith kidnapped by someone? What did he want the amulet for?

Mr. Penguin gulped at the thought. He didn’t know any of the answers, but he did know two things:

1. Everything felt like it was leading in a very dangerous direction and…

2. Whatever WAS going on, Edith seemed to be the key to it all.

Edith was still missing, and now Cynthia and Professor Umlaut were stuck on a train with a master criminal.

“We have to get to Cynthia and Professor Umlaut, and find Edith,” Mr. Penguin said. His flippers quivered, because what he really wanted to do was lie down and only get up when everything was back to being jolly. He said in a thin little voice: “We need to get to the Valley of Peril as soon as possible. But how?”

He looked around. There was just vast emptiness all around them.

“Easy!” said Farooq, smiling. “They’ll take us,” he added, pointing.

Mr. Penguin squinted. Not far away there were some shapes that he had mistaken for piles of sand and rocks. One of the shapes yawned and he realized that he had been mistaken.

“Oh no!” he cried, “not DONKEYS again!” NO, said Colin’s pad. He turned the page. It said one word:

CAMELS.
