Chapter 7

In Miss Darcy’s room, Elizabeth sat as the young lady admired the piano forte that now sat by the windows near the fireplace. The joy in Miss Darcy’s face blunted the ravages of the pain she had suffered most of the day.

The midwife had come and made her examination. “I reckon the young miss might give birth soon, but not this day. It is only the pain all ladies suffer before a babe is come. I will come to see her again in a few day’s time. With the first babe, often the delivery is later than sooner.”

Her proclamation had left Miss Darcy unsettled. Mr. Darcy had persuaded the physician from London to remain at Netherfield Park with a generous offer of repayment and lodging. Miss Darcy seemed to be happy with this arrangement and declared that she might be able to play the instrument her brother had brought up in a few days.

“Oh, how I would love to play again,” she repeated and Elizabeth took her hand.

“When you are able, I will help you to the bench. Mr. Darcy and I will stand beside and behind you so that you may not be concerned. I must say I am eager to hear you play after all the praise your brother has given your skill.”

Mr. Darcy smiled at Elizabeth, his gaze now filled with love that anyone could see. She blushed and looked away, returning her attention to Miss Darcy again. Elizabeth moved to the bed and sat beside her new friend. “I have seen my Uncle Gardiner rub my Aunt Madeline’s back when she was increasing and she was most pleased. Would you allow me to see whether it might give you relief?”

Miss Darcy scooted around in the bed, giving Elizabeth her back and murmured her consent.

As Elizabeth tended Miss Darcy, the sighs and exclamations of thanks came swiftly. Mr. Darcy decided to read to them as the evening came on. When dinner was served, Miss Darcy sent them both away so that she might sleep for Elizabeth’s attention to her aching back had relaxed her so that she wished to slumber for a time.

When they entered the hallway, Elizabeth was surprised to see Jane further down the way by the staircase, her arm in Mr. Bingley’s, supported well by that man.

Leaving Mr. Darcy, she hurried to Jane’s side and was careful not to jostle her sister in her enthusiasm. “I did not think you would come down for dinner, Jane. Are you certain you are able?” Elizabeth’s concern replaced her excitement.

Jane smiled, her countenance one of serene contentment. “Lizzy, I have never felt better. Mr. Bingley and I have wonderful news to share with you and Mr. Darcy at dinner. It is a shame Miss Bingley may not come to the dining room. Come, let us all go down.”

Mr. Darcy offered a stunned Elizabeth his arm and she took it as she watched her sister descend with Mr. Bingley. “Are you well, Miss Elizabeth? I wonder what news Charles might have to share with the two of us?” Mr.
