Chapter 11

Thursday

Maverick

I parked my dirty red truck in between a gold Jaguar and shiny-black Mercedes-Benz. I never understood the need to spend so much money on a fucking car. All it did was get you from point a to point b, but people insisted it have the latest technology and be nicer than other people they knew. I’d bet good money that the guys who owned those two luxury vehicles had micro-penises, too.

The only time I had ever needed a lawyer was when my father passed away and was dealing with his will. The one I used had worked for the same law firm that I went to that morning, but according to their website, had long since retired. As I made my way towards the front door, I started to second-guess myself by wondering if I should have made an appointment.

But I never did like waiting.

“They were good to me before, so here’s to hoping.”

The waiting room was full of people in expensive-looking suits, including a man and woman who were clearly going through a divorce. I tipped my cowboy hat at them before making my way to the receptionist, but the man thought I was flirting with her and shot me a nasty look. I held my hands up to show I was just being friendly, but the man still glared at me with venom in his eyes.

The secretary looked me up and down before sliding the glass partition aside. “May I help you, sir?”

“Yes, ma’am. Am I able to meet with a lawyer today? Your law firm helped me a while back with my father’s will, and I’m in sort of a predicament right now. I can pay cash, too.”

Her eyes lit up when I mentioned cash, probably because I didn’t look like I had any. “All of our lawyers are in with clients right now, but if you have a seat, one can meet with you shortly.”

I sat down on the opposite side of the waiting room, away from the nasty gaze from that man. Nobody in there had a smile on their face, and as I clutched onto all of the paperwork I had brought with me, I wanted to take a moment and tell them that city life ain’t worth the stress. Every single one of those people looked as though they could use a vacation in the Tennessee mountains, far away from the city and all of its problems.

I picked up a magazine called ‘Billionaires Monthly’, chuckled, then flung it back down on the end table. All of these people are working their asses off to accumulate as much money as possible, and for what? It didn’t make any sense to me. By the time they had enough money in the bank to retire on, they’d probably have one foot in the grave at the same time. That’s not how I wanted to live my life. I wanted to enjoy what little money I did earn, not sit back and watch it grow.
