Toby caught up to Walt as the cashier passed through the wrecked hole in Stanley’s Sporting Goods shop.

“Stan’s gonna be pissed,” Toby said.

“Stan’s a nice guy,” Walt said. “And his name’s really Vidur.”

“Stanley’s real name is Vidur?”

“Yeah.”

“Stanley Vidur?”

“Just Vidur,” Walt huffed as they raced through the mall’s corridors. “Don’t know his last name. Very nice guy, though.”

They reached the inside entrance to Mollymart. Toby peered out onto the parking lot. Forms hurried across the lot in the direction of the breached doors. Walt tapped him on the shoulder, breaking his horrified stare. The pair went inside the grocery store and heard the zombies wedged inside the vestibule, still hammering away at the glass. In seconds, the two men saw that trapped mass and kept low amongst the many bins inside the entryway.

The dead didn’t notice them.

Walt stopped behind a shelving unit filled with apples

“Okay, listen,” Walt said. “The lights are just over there. I’ll flick the lights on and off until I hear your buddies outside.”

“Gus and Gord.”

“Gus and Gord,” Walt clarified.

“And what do I do?”

“Ahh … let them see you. Until you can hear the cars. Then get out of sight.”

“Hey!” a voice called out.

Both men turned around to see Nelson and his crowbar running past the deli counter. Nelson scooted down and bobbed his way toward the two men.

“Rebecca sent me,” the stock guy said. “And I remembered something on the way over here. We need to kill the lights over the loading bay area for those guys. It’s all lit up over there. I can do that.”

“Go with him,” Walt ordered. “Just in case.”

Toby pointed to the weakening doors. “But––”

“Turn off those lights and get back here.” Walt wasn’t in the mood to talk things out.

Toby looked to Nelson and gestured for him to lead on. They left Walt circling fruit and produce bins in the dark, moving toward the light switches. Toby glanced over his shoulder once as they neared the double doors leading out back. The distant front was dark, with shadows jumping behind the vestibule’s glass.

The sight left Toby in a rare moment of speechlessness.

Nelson pushed through the swinging doors, bringing Toby back to the present. They hurried inside, past the aisles brimming with boxed foodstuffs.

Toby slowed, very much aware of the freezer unit and the zombie imprisoned some thirty feet away back there.

He listened.

Realizing he wasn’t being followed, Nelson stopped and looked back. Toby held up a hand, asking for quiet.

Boom.

The prisoner hit the door. He was still in the box. All was good.

Toby caught up to Nelson. “He’s still in there.”

“He’s not going anywhere. The guy’s gotta be super strong to push that pallet of water away. And then there’s the door lock.”

“Thought you said it was a push lock? A safety release?”

“Yeah, but it’s a zombie, man. He can’t figure that thing out. They’re brainless.”

Toby reluctantly nodded, but there was something in that reasoning that seemed off to him.

The pounding on the freezer door receded as they ran past the aisle mouths.
