Chapter Seven

Christiana didn’t know what to expect. What she didn’t expect was what she saw. The inside of the cocktail room was decorated to look like the interior of a log cabin. As soon as they entered, a realistic looking electric fireplace sprung to life. Clever use of lights and mirrors made it look as if there was a real fire in the fireplace, and a heating unit made it feel warm. In front of the fireplace was a brown bear skin rug. The walls of the cabin were made of large round half-logs, smooth and dark. The walls had some fake windows with television screens placed on the other side. The screens showed a dark, starry forest night scene, and every so often, a shooting star would go across one of the displays. There were ambient sounds of birds and wild animals rustling in bushes.

There was a large wooden bed in a corner of the room. It had a red and black buffalo check set of sheets and blankets and pillows, the red and black plaid-like pattern one associated with the Midwest, with forests and lumberjacks and wholesome hominess, but on that bed, it looked sinful.

On the other side of the room, there was a brown leather couch with some knitted throw blankets on it. There was a small shelf of books, and there was a wooden coffee table. That must be where the cocktails were meant to go. Desserts would fit on it nicely.

“What do you think?” asked Chad.

“I think it’s perfect,” said Christiana.

“So…you’re saying it’s just like you?” asked Barrett.

Christiana’s heart stopped for a second. What the heck had Barrett just said?

Before Christiana could ask the question, Chad said, “Wait…what’s on this tray?”

For a second, Christiana had forgotten about the tray. She hadn’t gone into the cocktail room to deliver the desserts herself. She’d left that part of the surprise to Thomas and, so focused on taking in the sights and sounds of the cocktail room, she hadn’t thought to look for the rustic faux-antique copper bar cart that was specifically designated as the drink cart for the ‘Mountain Bear Buns’ cocktail room. It had been put to the side, and Chad was wheeling it carefully toward the sofa.

“Why do I have a feeling this is your doing?” asked Barrett.

“Oh, I just…it’s so silly,” said Christiana, brushing a hair from her shoulder. “I just…I wanted to show you two my appreciation for, well, defending me yesterday, for defending Angie, too. I know it was probably nothing to you two, but…”

“Hey, you and Ang are part of this club,” said Chad, pulling the strand of hair back, so it framed Christiana’s face. The sudden touch of the shifter didn’t shock Christiana. She was expecting electricity, sparks, lightning, but instead, she melted, like the very ice cream she’d made had melted on her tongue earlier that day. Chad made her feel gooey inside, wet where it counted, and she craved even more of his sweet, sweet touch.

“I feel like I am,” admitted Christiana.
