PURSUED AND TORMENTED
Escaping an abuser is not always as simple as driving away from the scene of the abuse to get a fresh start hundreds of miles up the road. If that person is unrelentingâas was the case with Charlesâs mother, the hunter pursuing the huntedâshe continues to torment her prey. Thereâs no intent to back down. The controlling maneuvers only shift from in-home verbal and physical beatings to stalking and creating mental anguish.
RELATIONSHIPS SUFFER
The flashbacks were unstoppable. It kept coming back to me how my mother had once gloated about how she had people watching me. I told Mary about that. She turned physically cold to the touch.
Mary and I spent eight years together. During our last four years, my mother sought us out. At first, she behaved in a halfway friendly manner and a tiny shoot of hope for change began to grow. Of course, everything has to come to an end. After two years of some type of friendship, Mother went back to her old self. The same old problems started up all over again. Mary finally broke under the emotional load and returned to Fortuna, California, and to her parents.
In 1976, I married Sharon. Ten years later we were divorced and she passed away in 1987. After three more years, Linda and I married. One day she asked about my parents. I told her the whole ball of wax. She thought it was pretty ridiculous. I agreed. Linda wasnât one to put up with my motherâs tricks and would tell her off. Again, this marriage was doomed; after eight years another divorce.
