You must have thought the world’s a wedding made for

singing before you got snakebit. Each squeak & chirp,

accompaniment—beside the asphodel, the wolf’s

bane breaking open bells, before you fell down

death’s dumb ears, you must have smelled the

lavender that grows wild on your island, still—

& felt perennial rain’s vow. You did not stand

where I stand now, where acid floods the rain’s

clean vow, we clone the chirps to mimic sames,

a band of blands that needs no blooming but for

medicine—with weddings done beside the chicken

plant, where we don masks to bear the shitty scent

of meat’s raw coop, cacophony are pesticides sounding

the aphid, armyworm—rootworm, snake, & earworm mute.
