T he Park Place Pub was in Morrow’s rearview mirror seconds after he left. He had learned long ago not to fight his instincts or his intuition during a con. His mind was full of steps, plans, and backup plans, so when something clicked and he realized it was important enough to change everything, he’d learned to embrace it. That’s what happened when Tara told him about LeBlanc’s Friday night routine at the Jaguar. On this Thursday night, he estimated his arrival time at his current destination to be twenty-five minutes.

Paying the cover fee of ten bucks at the Hot Tail Club, Morrow got semi-escorted into the main room where dancers were on the stage and at the tables nearly everywhere. He got a beer at the bar, then leaned over to the bartender and asked, “Is Lexy working tonight?”

The guy nodded and pointed to the left. “Last time I saw her, she was on Stage Three over there.”

Morrow knew that meant she could be anywhere, but at least she was in the building. He wandered around, nursing his beer until he spotted her doing a table dance for a half-drunk customer. He sat down at an open table along the walkway that he knew she’d be taking sooner or later. It was later. The half-drunk patron was working his way toward fully drunk one table dance at a time. He liked Lexy and kept paying her to stay with him. Lexy was no fool. She was happy to stay where the money was flowing freely.

About six songs later, the drunk, apparently running low on cash, realized he could spend his remaining money on beers or on one more table dance. He chose beer.

Lexy turned around and started walking back to the center of the room, glancing left and right, looking for a new lonely face she could entertain. She stopped walking when she saw Morrow.

“Morrow! Haven’t seen you in—in, I don’t know, way too long. How are you?”

Morrow motioned for her to take the seat across from him. “I’ve been busy. How are you, Lex?”

“Better than you, I think. You look like a sparring partner who forgot his head gear. You OK?”

“And you look gorgeous as usual.”

Lexy eyed him and said, “This is business, not pleasure, right?”

“As always, you’re very observant. I, um, I need a favor.”

“Name it.”

“You’re a, um, still a free agent, right?” Morrow asked.

“I’m an independent contractor,” she replied.

“Right, and so you can work anywhere you want. I mean anywhere that will have you, right?”

“Yeah,” Lexy said, dragging out the one syllable word into the next minute.

“I know you said you used to work at the Jaguar before here. Did you leave on good terms?”

“Morrow, just spit it out. What do you need?”

Morrow moved a bit closer to the table and leaned in. “I was wondering if I could talk you into working tomorrow night at the Jaguar. Just one night. There’s a guy coming in that spends a lot of dough on the girls and I need him to be, um, occupied and distracted.
