Luke
My phone buzzes at eight a.m., just as Iâm about to leave for a jog.
My heart skips. Itâs Katelyn!
âHi, Katelyn,â I say into the phone.
âHi, Luke.â
âTo what do I owe this pleasure?â
âI was wonderingâ¦if you could do something for me.â
âOf course. What do you need?â
âFirst of all, are you working tonight?â
âYeah.â
âWhat time?â
âI go in at five.â
She pauses a moment. âGood. Could you take me somewhere around one oâclock?â
âSure. Where?â
Another pause. Then, âAtticus Prison.â
The phone slides out of my hand and hits the hardwood with a clatter. I hastily pick it up and glue it back to my ear.
âIâm going to need a little more information.â
âI have to see my cousin. His name is Anthony. Heâs in prison there.â
âOh.â Relief sweeps through me. A cousin. I can deal with that. âOf course.â
âI got on his visitorâs list, and I have to go at one because my aunt is going this morning. I donât want to disturb their time. But visitation is over at two, and I want at least an hour. I just need you to take me. They wonât let us both go in. I just donât⦠I donât want to go alone.â
âI understand.â I wouldnât want to go to a prison alone either.
I came a hairâs breadth away from a lifetime in one.
In fact, if anyone other than Katelyn were asking me to do this, the answer would be not only no, but hell no.
âIâll get a cab and come get you.â
âYou donât have a car?â
âNo one has a car in New York, Katelyn.â
âOh. Yeah. Of course. But a cabâs so expensive. Itâs upstate. About an hour away.â
âI know where it is. Donât worry. Itâs on me.â
âI couldnât.â
âYou didnât. I offered.â
âI have money, Luke.â
âSo do I, and I canât think of anything better to spend it on than an afternoon with you.â True words. Even a cab ride to a prison sounds good if Katelyn is involved.
âIâll be at your place around eleven. Sound good? Will that give us enough time?â
âYeah. I think so. Iâll eat an early lunch.â
âBetter yet, you and I will go to lunch beforehand. Name the place.â
âIâm still new here. I donât know any places other than The Glass House and that Italian place we went to.â
âGood enough. Iâll walk to your place, weâll find a place for early lunch, and then weâll hail a cab and get to the prison.â
âAll right.â I almost hear a smile in her voice. âThank you, Luke.â
âYouâre welcome. See you soon.â
My day is suddenly better.
Iâm going to see Katelyn today.
