Chapter Twelve

The next day, Catherine and I decide to ditch the guys for the morning and spend some time together.

"Let's run to Jewels Cafe," I suggest. "I've not had nearly enough coffee to make it through today, and you'll love it! It's just opened and it’s great! You have to try it!" Catherine laughs.

"You can quit trying to sell your need for coffee. I know you aren't functional without like four cups a day." She pats my shoulder and looks around. "Wow, things have changed a lot since I left."

"Yep, a few new businesses, like this one." I point to a store next door to work. "Dandy’s Handy Hardware store only just opened."

"I miss the slow-paced life that I grew up with. Finance is all go go go, all the time. It's exhausting."

I point to the door as she's speaking, and we walk inside.

We move toward the counter and I order a black coffee with extra shots of espresso in it. Catherine orders a mood tea, which turns dark green as soon as she picks it up.

"Oh, that's fun," she says. "Why did it change color?"

"It changes to reflect the mood of the person who's holding it," Nephrite tells us before turning away.

"What are you feeling?" I ask. "Green is a fun color... Hmmm, are you jealous, growing, calm?"

She lets out a soft laugh, stepping closer to the center of the room to look at the fireplace.

"I love this. I can just imagine coming in here in the winter and curling up with coffee and a book. Ugh, this place is perfect." The last sentence comes out longingly.

"Yes, I'm sure I'll spend a lot of time here." I reach out to gently rub her arm. "And it looks like my life is settling here, so you can always come visit." She nods softly. "Are you ready to keep exploring?" I ask.

"Yes. Let's see what other stores are new," Catherine pastes on a smile and turns back to the entrance.

I open the door while sipping my coffee and it almost hits a girl with curly blonde hair.

"Oops, sorry," I apologize. "Guess I was more interested in my drink than where I was going." I scrunch up my face and offer the girl a smile.

"No worries," she says. "You didn't hit me."

"Citrine?" I hear Catherine say as she steps out behind me.

"Catherine?! I didn't know you were back!" The girl steps around me to hug my cousin.

"Just visiting," Catherine tells her. "This is my cousin, Garnet. She lives here now."

"Nice to meet you." I lift my hand to shake and am surprised when she pulls me into a hug.

"You too!" Citrine says. "We should all hang out. You and I can catch up, and Garnet and I can become friends. What are you doing tonight? I'm hosting a trivia night at Nessie's Pub." She reaches into her purse and pulls out a chicken nugget.

I try to stop a laugh at the sight and end up snorting. Catherine reaches over and slaps my arm.
