With a full day at the Christmas tree farm tomorrow, it was good to know at least he could chill out tonight at the apartment. But Finn found himself heading towards the Inglenook Falls markets instead, perusing the stalls like the other families, tourists, locals, all having a good time and welcoming in the holidays. He picked up a mulled cider at one, had chocolate tasters at the next, ignoring any pings on his cell phone until he finally accepted he’d have to turn it off to get some headspace.

The stars out here looked different to any he managed to see in New York City. The buildings in Manhattan hid so much of the sky but out here it was for everyone to admire. A blanket spread out across the little town.

‘It’s Finn, isn’t it?’ An attractive, smiling girl with chestnut hair recognised him and smiled as she came away from the cheese stall. ‘Darcy,’ she reminded him.

He patted a hand to his forehead. ‘Of course it is, sorry, I had a momentary blank then.’ He wondered if he should mention the state he’d turned up in at the Inglenook Inn for Thanksgiving but if Darcy was thinking about it she didn’t let on and he was happy to overlook the memory. With it being a weekend, Finn wasn’t surprised when Darcy’s partner Myles joined her and introduced himself again. Dylan was next along with all four of his kids and meeting Ruby and Jacob was surreal. The last time Finn had seen them, Ruby was sporting cute pigtails and wore a sparkly fairy dress and Jacob had that uncoordinated way of a kid who was still trying to grow into his own body. But now Jacob had more confidence and Ruby was turning into a proper little lady.

‘You have a beautiful family,’ he told Dylan, who had hold of Tabitha’s hand while Emily snuggled up against him in his other arm.

‘Thank you.’ Dylan was clearly taken aback by such a candid remark, rare to hear from Finn.

‘Not that I’m going soft or anything,’ Finn added with a grin as Dylan persuaded Emily to walk too and hold his other hand. She wasn’t exactly light, Finn could vouch for that after she’d fallen asleep on him. And that day had evoked memories of Mackenzie. It had reminded Finn of how precious those we love are, and for once he hadn’t batted the emotion away.

Dylan cocked his head towards the knitting stall. ‘Come on, I’m grabbing Cleo and we’re getting hot dogs. You’re welcome to join us.’

‘I’ll hang around but I’ll pass on the food, I’ve had enough to eat with my parents today.’

‘How did that go?’

They weaved through the crowds to find the knitting stall, Kaisha laughing animatedly with a customer, red Santa Claus earrings swinging from her lobes. You couldn’t deny the girl was fun – no wonder Ruby went straight to her. Even he had to admire the colourful clothes she wore, the bright-turquoise, glittery Doc Martens that caught a shaft of light unexpectedly.
