START THE HIKE

This hike is mostly shaded for the first 0.8 mile, and then not at all thereafter, so aim for a morning hike, wear sunscreen, and bring plenty of water. Note that the trail can also be quite dusty summer-early fall.

MILE 0-0.9: Tumalo Mountain Trailhead to Meadows

You’ll find the Tumalo Mountain Trailhead near a vault toilet at the northwestern edge of the Dutchman Flat Sno-Park parking lot. Almost immediately you’ll come upon an unmarked intersection—the path that parallels the highway here is reserved for mountain bikers, so continue straight ahead to begin your steady ascent. The trail switchbacks five times over the first 0.6 mile, during which you’ll gain 375 feet as you hike through a forest of ponderosa pine and mountain hemlock. In another 0.3 mile, you’ll leave the forest for exposed meadows, dotted with lodgepole pine and whitebark pine. Keep an eye out for purple lupine, Davidson’s penstemon, red paintbrush, and other wildflowers, which bloom well into July.
