TRADITIONAL MARKETS
Mesoamerican civilizations as far back as the early Olmecs on the Gulf Coast established open-air marketplaces for trade and commerce, and after the Spanish conquest, many important pre-Columbian markets continued to operate throughout the New World, including the giant market square in what is today the Zócalo. Often atmospheric and interesting, neighborhood markets are hands down the best places to shop for fruits and vegetables, dairy, meat, and tortillas, and many have a “claim to fame,” like specializing in a particular cuisine or boasting a large selection of flowers and piñatas. In addition, weekly markets sell crafts, antiques, specialty food, and more.
If you only have time to visit one market, there is none more emblematic of the city than the immense and atmospheric Mercado de la Merced on the edge of the Centro Histórico. Right next to the Merced, the Mercado Sonora is best known for its off-beat, esoteric offerings, like medicinal herbs, healing candles, witchcraft products, and live animals. The Mercado San Juan in the old San Juan neighborhood is known throughout the city for its unusual selection of meats and produce, like quail eggs, tropical fruits, alligator steaks, toasted grasshoppers, and other delicacies. Bazaar Sábado, held every Saturday in San Ángel, is a well-known place to shop for traditional Mexican crafts as well as handmade leather goods, shoes, candles, and other souvenirs. Tianguis Cultural del Chopo, held every Saturday, is an open-air market selling records, rock posters, band T-shirts, and every other manner of music memorabilia. Finally, for an on-the-ground perspective on Mexico City’s food economy, head to the Central de Abasto, a wholesale market that supplies 80 percent of the capital’s edibles. There is nothing you won’t find here, from potatoes to crab meat, and the sheer size is astonishing.
