S Long Bay Beach

Long Bay Beach is one of the most picturesque and unspoiled beaches in Jamaica. Lined with coconut palms, the beach is also known for its occasional swell and draws surfers from nearby Boston Bay as well as the die-hard Mystic crew from Jamnesia in Bull Bay, St. Andrew. It’s also known to have dangerous riptides and a rocky seafloor to the western side; caution is always advised.

Transplants from Bologna, Italy, run S La Familia Restaurant (Pen Lane, tel. 876/913-7843, cell tel. 876/892-2195, [email protected], by reservation only, US$15-35), serving the best lasagna, tagliatelle, and ceviche. Pizza and bread are baked in a conventional gas oven.

Cliffhanger Restaurant & Lounge (Ross Craig, Kensington District, Portland, cell tel. 876/860-1395, [email protected], 5 kilometers/3 miles southeast of Long Bay, noon-10pm Fri.-Sat., noon-9pm Sun., US$11-50) serves seafood, specializing in lionfish five different ways: with wine and beer, escoveitch, coconut sauce, curried, and jerk. Oxtail, curried goat, fried and stewed chicken, and vegan fare are served.
