Built from scratch, rather than recycled, the deceptively named Five actually is a design hotel with a total of 17 rooms in three categories: small, medium, and large (the “five” derives from the number of brothers and sisters who own the place). The management deserves truth-in-labeling credit for the 11 “smalls,” but in truth they’re a bit bigger than the name implies: king-size beds, though, occupy most of the floor space. The baths are likewise compact but the showers spacious.

The capacious common areas, including a reading room, two large patios, and an even larger rooftop terrace with a whirlpool tub, help compensate for any small interior spaces. The entire hotel enjoys a quiet seclusion uncommon in this part of town, despite being surrounded by restaurants, bars, and shops.

Rates for the smalls are US$125 s or d, but the “mediums” that face the street, with stylish balconies and whirlpool tubs for US$150 s or d, may be better values. The “large” rooms go for US$160–180, depending on whether or not it has a whirlpool tub, but an “extra-large” with a separate private terrace costs US$240 s or d. There’s Wi-Fi throughout, but rates do not include 21 percent taxes.
