And Thus He Read the Stories Full of Monstrous Sex

On a foggy night in September, Peter Beckman had grown tired of the book he was reading. It was a required reading for his senior English class called 'Of Mice and Men' by John Steinback; a bleak and disturbing drama. Like many required readings it was a story full of deep meaning written to make its reader reflect on the nature of humanity. Peter already surmised what the story was trying to reflect upon and yet, still found the story to be rather uninteresting. It landed too squarely in the grey world of the real, and Peter was too much a daydreamer of the strange and fantastic. Though Peter had a knack of understanding the real world, he preferred to mostly avoid it. So he went down stairs to find something else to read.

A large bookcase in his mother's study held a considerable collection of the stories he was more fond of while growing up. Lewis Carol's 'Alice in Wonderland,' L. Frank Baum's 'Wizard of Oz,' and many of Pier's Anthony's 'Xanth' series lined the shelf, and in one dark corner were the works of H.P. Lovecraft, Stephan King and Algernon Blackwood. All of them weird and wild escapist tales of fantasy covering all scopes of human emotion and delight. Even the study itself was a fantastic room made up of old architecture and weird angles that did not befit the rest of the house. The shelves were even set inside of a mason work arch with worn and crumbly intricate patterns and symbols carved into it. Peter spent long hours and sometimes whole nights allowing himself to get lost in the abstract and claustrophobic slice of this wonderland nestled in a corner of the mundane world he called real life.

It was not unusual for Peter in a flight of fancy to imagine the bookcase surrounded in a mystical vaporous fog. The contents of the bookcase guarded by some unseen poltergeist that would trick his hand to pick out some mischievous tome for his daily inspiration of otherworldly pleasure. However, this evening something was amiss. A book was missing and a rather voluminous one at that. Peter could not remember a book taking up such an amount of space before, and all books were accounted for as far as he could tell.

No matter, his hands knew exactly where to look for tonight's remaining entertainment. At first they lurched for a copy of Tolkien, but then decided he wanted something of a sword and sorcery narrative, like that produced by Robert E. Howard. Then he also took a copy of 'The Last Unicorn' by Peter S. Beagle to contrast the primal savagery with something more charming and lyrical. He snatched both in haste and hurried to his room. He did not believe in ghosts, but had a knack of frightening himself all the same when it came to farfetched conclusions. The gap in the bookshelf had a grip over his senses that he couldn't understand, and played marvelous tricks with his imagination.
