Chapter Thirteen

SEIRIOS WALKED OVER to Nora and pulled her strap back up, smoothing the shoulder of her dress. “Face away from me. I like the way the light catches your hair.” He studied her a second before he walked back to the easel.

“I’m bored, don’t you have enough to go on from memory now?” Nora crossed her legs and turned to him.

“Look away, please.” He tapped a finger on his brush and tried to give her the patience she’d shown him with other matters. As far as subjects went, she was awful, even more fidgety than the children. “Just a few more minutes and then we will go do whatever you want. My father sent more of that wine you like.” When he looked up to make sure he was using the right shade for her highlights, she was standing inches from him. “Nora.”

“Not in a few more minutes.” She took the brush from his hand and sat it down. “Now.”

He sat his palette down. “I want to have this done tonight. It means a lot to make my first completed work since my quest something special for you.”

Each time he brought it up, it seemed like she knew where he was going and would change gears. He didn’t want to hurt her. He didn’t want to hurt anyone anymore. “Nora, you remember earlier, when I said we needed to talk?”

“You said we could do what I want now. It’s not talk.” She nipped at his ear. “Where is the wine?”

“It’s important.” He put his hands on her shoulders, looking at her beautiful face and seeing the beginnings of a pout on her lips. “This, what we are doing.” He stopped, looking for words that wouldn’t sound crass. “You’ve been exactly what I needed.”

“Seirios, if you are about to thank me for my services and send me scuttling away in shame, then you are not the man I imagined you to be. Not the man who I adore.” She let her eyes fill with tears and deepened her pout. “Are you? Is that where we are? You are done with me now that you feel better? You want to give your best to someone else? That is how you treat me for standing by you at your very worse? When no one else did, mind you. Even Gwen pawned you off on Jamie, who hasn’t been in to check on you today.” When he
