Wire Killer Claims 6th Victim.

The world’s a hell of a place, John Henderson thought, tossing the morning paper into the waste I basket. He heard his son’s steps in the corridor. Killing for safety, money, or even revenge, he could understand, sure. But strangling women with barbed wire: that was crazy.

“Brian!” Henderson called, as his son passed his office door, jacket slung over one shoulder. “Take a walk with me before lunch.” It was not a request. Henderson conducted a semi-automatic inventory of the material on his desk, and decided none of it was incriminating. No, confidential. Old habits die slow. Anybody was welcome to search his office.

Brian leaned against the corridor wall, waiting. Brian never questioned him. Which was strange, because his son was smart and had a mind of his own.

Brian had turned out fine. It was too bad it took until the third grade to find the right school. The first five had been no good. The teachers and other kids had had it in for Brian because Henderson had money or because someone had started a rumor he had mob connections or maybe just because Brian was handsome and smart. Once they’d found the proper environment for him, he’d done fine. Didn’t have to defend himself from the little punks in the public schools. And there had been no more accusations like the one from that little subnormal. But the jerk’s mother had told the teacher and principal her kid was a liar and hurt himself to get attention. It had cost Henderson five thousand. But what’s money? He’d wanted Brian to have all the advantages. Still…

In spite of Henderson’s best intentions, and almost by accident, Brian made his bones when he was sixteen. The boy had come home late one Friday night and told him that some punk had tried to mug him, and he’d hit the turkey harder than he meant to. Actually, he’d happened to have a wrench. The only thing was…

The only thing was, he had the body in the car.

“Why didn’t you leave it where it was?”

Brian gave him a look from those Siamese-cat blue eyes. “My car might have been seen. I thought a police investigation might be embarrassing for you. For Mom and Marguerite.” They went out to the garage together. Brian’s mother and little sister were safely asleep.

The body was in the trunk. “It looks like you worked him over pretty good,” Henderson observed. The face was pulped and those gobbets of gray stuff had been brains.

“If I’d left him alive, he might have come after me.”

The guy had been alive when Brian put him in the trunk, Henderson thought. If he’d been dead, there wouldn’t be so much blood.

Well, maybe Brian had panicked. He’d led a sheltered life.

“Dad?” His voice sounded like a little boy’s. “What am I going to do?”

“Go to bed and forget about it. Give me your car keys. Don’t think about it again. Brian? Is the wrench in there?”

“Uh-huh. On the right side.
