Chapter

Nineteen

I just drove, once again leaving the town boundary without so much as a panic attack.

This time, I kept it local, heading toward Settler’s Point. Why? Masochism might have explained it. My throat tightened as the familiar landscape passed by, bathed in shadow. Cloud cover obscured the moon tonight, rendering everything beneath it in near pitch-blackness.

Attempting to traverse the winding, jagged roads in the daytime was a stretch. Doing so at night could be classified only as suicidal. Not far up the trail, I parked anyway and exited the car, inhaling the fresh air while trying to remember…

Something. Some minor detail to prove that all of this was merely in my head. Liwai and his family weren’t wolves, just psychos. I had made up the supernatural aspect to rationalize a series of very twisted coincidences. Nothing more.

If I followed the hillside to where I’d been attacked, all I would find was dirt, gravel, and the hard truth that there was no grim conspiracy. I’d merely been rejected by a man too mysterious for his own good.

Acknowledging that brought more relief to me than believing in serial killers, at least. A genuine smile shaped my lips as I shook my head at how insane I’d been the past few days.

Of course, werewolves didn’t exist.

Though wild animals did—especially in the woods around Kittywatt. Mainly reports of coyotes and bears, one of those creatures was certainly large enough to be responsible for the snapping branches I heard shatter the quiet nearby.

I whipped around, straining my eyes through the dark in the direction of the noise, just paces from the path.

A wild animal was big enough to make such a sound.

But not the low, unsettling laugh that echoed next.

Run! The thought ripped through my skull as I pivoted toward my car. The headlights were still on, painting a swath of light through the shadows. Plenty of light to illuminate the figure bounding toward me from the direction of the trees.

Not Liwai, a part of me sensed. There was something primal in how my body reacted to him, even from a distance. An instinctive knowledge of him.

But this figure was recognizable for another reason. His laugh and his cocky swagger brought an identity to mind even before he came close enough for me to make out his angular features and cold grin.

Cody.

“It’s about time the bastard came back.” He continued to advance, allowing more of himself to catch the light.

My cheeks flamed as I realized he was naked. Then any awkwardness turned to fear as I noted the dark streaks painting his skin. His teeth were bared, and his eyes were an unholy hue of amber, blazing through the darkness.

“Did he finally realize he didn’t finish the job?” He laughed, the sound unsteady. Broken. “Poor little Liwai. He knows the penalty for killing one of his own kind. And let me guess? You’re the bait.”

Run, Kaydee…

I took a step, but he was already crossing the space between me and my car. I’d have to run to reach it, but one look at him warned me that an escape route was the least of my worries.
