The shotgun thudded atop a coffee table as Karen had a seat in an overstuffed armchair. The inside of her home was cozy, with antiquated drapes, old furniture, and oil paintings on the walls. She struck a match and lit a fat cigar, kicking her bare feet up.

The five young adults sat on an old couch across from her, stark-still. Crammed in shoulder-to-shoulder, they simply stared at her in a state of shock, shallowly breathing.

“So,” Karen said. “You got questions. Start asking.”

The group exchanged looks.

“Was... what just happened out there real?” Nikki asked.

Karen rolled her eyes. “No, it was done with computers. For fuck’s sake. Anybody got a proper question?”

“But you’re the cafeteria lady,” Chelsea said.

“That’s not a question,” Karen said. “And you know I have a name. Karen. Use it.”

“I’m Nikki—” Nikki tried to say before getting cut off.

“I know who you all are. All of you,” Karen explained. “I punch you fuckers’ meal cards every day, remember?” Karen glanced at Sabrina. “Even you, Ruskie,” Karen said.

“Um, a man outside... another vampire?” Sabrina asked.

“Another?” Karen asked.

All eyes fell on Marcus. He glared back and sullenly spoke. “When that thing showed up, I was telling a story about this woman who seemed to be a vampire. I saw her at Dammasch State Hospital. She was with another girl, and they saw me. The next thing I know, this fucking mummy thing they got comes to life and tries to kill me.”

“You kinda left that part out,” Chelsea added.

“Yeah, because you bitches were totally hanging on every word,” Marcus said.

“Alright, cork it before you leave a piss-stain on my couch,” Karen said. “The mummy. Was it the same one that was stolen from the maritime museum?”

“Probably,” Marcus said. “I think so.”

“No,” Karen said. “Was it the same exact mummy? Yes or no?”

“Lady, how many fucking mummies are there in Seaport Village?” Valerie asked.

“Hopefully, there’s more than one because if the bitch you saw was Vanna Helsing’s corpse, then we’re all in a hand basket full of bullshit,” Karen said.

Karen stood, moving across the room to pass along books that had been squeezed into an old cabinet. Her fingers traced along them.

“Now, I’m going to talk. Whether you believe me isn’t any of my concern. Seeing as you little shits have gone and stuck your heads on the chopping block...” Karen started. She dragged a book out and returned to her seat, continuing. “...you deserve to know what you’re up against. Humankind’s been waging a guerilla war against the powers of darkness for the last two thousand years. The Dark Ages marked the last time that humans had their balls in a sling by the creatures of the night, and they didn’t take too kindly to being bumped off the top of the food chain.”

She opened the page. It showed an old, yellowed woodcarving depicting a battlefield. On one side was an army of Knights Templar, while the other comprised all kinds of fanged and winged monsters. The text read “Turning Point”.
