Chapter Eight

Drew’s meltdown was the beginning of a big change. He seemed to resent everything and everyone that had spelled success. He criticized Melanie, spoke rudely to Ritchie, especially if the child mentioned his father, and even angered his best friend.

Henry and Roz completed the educational software design they had worked on together, applied for a patent and began to market their product. Drew voiced his skepticism.

“There is so much competition in that market, even the giants have a hard time making money. Microsoft has cornered the market on just about everything, to the point of forcing action from the FTC. What chance do you have against all of that?”

Henry was accustomed to Drew’s putdowns and didn’t seem to mind. Roz took his criticism to heart. “Microsoft is blowing everyone away because they have a better mousetrap and we stand as much of a chance as anyone else. Most of the research and development is being aimed at the business world. Our products are directed at schools, including home schools, where parents and teacher are willing to try anything that helps the children learn.”

“Well, I hope you make it, but take my advice, don’t give up your day jobs.”

When Henry announced his good news of a half-million dollar sale for the rights to their teaching material, Drew’s ego sagged even further. His congratulatory “Great, man.”, was filled with noticeable envy and sarcasm.

“Well, don’t blow a gasket, old buddy. I called you first, before I called my own brother.”

“Henry, man, I’m very happy for you and Roz. I’m just in a personal slump right now. It’s hard for me to feel good about anything. I’m glad you sold your design. Glad you and Roz will be rolling in dough, and glad you’re my best friend.”

He hastened through the conversation, poured a glass of bourbon and sank into the doldrums that had been his wallowing place since losing the promotion he had felt was a sure thing. Melanie was treading lightly around him, agreeing with or registering no comment in hopes of keeping peace until he snapped out of his mood. She tried to find things to cheer him that only worsened his sulking.

“Honey, don’t forget the dinner on Saturday night. Roz and Henry are sitting at our table you know.”

“I wasn’t planning to go. I don’t think I can take another evening of listening to Henry pat himself on the back.” He swallowed the strong liquid without wincing and slammed the glass on the table.

“Drew, we have to go. I have to go, and I certainly don’t want to sit there alone.”

“I’m sure the modern day Clarence Darrow will be there. Sit with him. I don’t mind.”

She angrily snapped the towel she had holding, causing him to jump. “I didn’t marry you so I could attend social functions with my ex-husband. I’m sure Richard is not going alone, and even if he did, I’m not going to ask him to escort me. What the hell is wrong with you, Drew? You’re not the first person to be passed over for a promotion, and you won’t be the last.
