He didn’t reply, but it was probably a good thing as the car slowed to a stop.

I didn’t give the driver a chance and pushed open the door and climbed out, marching toward the steps of the museum where the event was being held.

Elias came rushing behind me.

“Would you like to take my hand?”

“Absolutely not.” I was being a bitch, but I had no intention of putting on a performance and resolved to give Antonio what for when I spotted him.

He fell into step beside me, red faced.

I couldn’t wait to get inside then dismiss him. I’d tell him to piss off now, but as much as I disliked him, he would earn his hourly pay by simply walking me inside, then I’d find my own way.

“Look, I’m sorry if I offended you earlier, but it was only in response to your dial-a-date comment.”

“My comment wasn’t meant to insult you, but it’s not so far removed from the truth, is it?”

“No, but I take pride in what I do, and this has never happened to me before.”

I stopped and looked at him, “Listen, Elias, I never wanted an escort for this evening, you were kind of forced upon me by Antonio, who will feel the sharp edge of my tongue for this.”

“I had no idea.”

“Now you do, so what I propose is you see me inside, linger for a few minutes, then you’re free to do whatever you want for the rest of the evening. Bill Antonio whatever you like, I won’t dispute it.”

“I want you to have a good time tonight, Eliza.”

“And I will, but I don’t need you to do it, okay.”

“Is there anything I can do to make things better between us?”

“Never having to see you again would be a good start.”

He laughed. “You certainly don’t hold back, do you?”

“I’ve been around long enough to have earned the right to speak my mind, Elias.”

I carried on toward the entrance.
