Once you’ve compiled this evidence, decide what you think a suitable pay rise might be. Have an actual figure or range in mind. Are you asking for an extra $2000 or $20 000? Your boss will probably ask for that number when you take the next step, which is requesting your pay rise.

The thought of sitting across the desk from your boss asking for a pay rise may be enough to give you heart palpitations. You don’t have to stride in all bolshie, thumping the desk and demanding your true value be compensated commensurately or you’ll leave this instant. You don’t have to turn into a whining child, complaining ‘I didn’t get as much as she did!’ while pointing at your co-worker. It can be a pleasant, professional experience with no ire involved.
