Return to Newport Beach.

Ithanked Lama Tsot for seeing me so quickly as I encountered him at the entrance to his Dharma Center. I felt like I had to talk to someone I could trust about the problem I was having with my husband Drew. It was pulling me in two and I didn't know what to do.

"No problem, Daphne. Lama Tsot glad be able help you. Wat matter?" he replied.

"It's the Kentucky Derby, Lama Tsot," I explained.

"Derby? Wat is Derby?"

"The most prestigious horse race in America. I've done nothing the last 10 years but look for colts that I thought had a possibility of winning the race."

"Winning race?" Lama Tsot looked perplexed.

"You know, Horse racing. Horse owners and their jockeys compete with each other for a large sum of money in races."

"Oh, dat like yak races in Tibet."

"I imagine so." I explained to Lama Tsot that before I had met Drew I was sure Rainbow's End and Gypsy Strolling were going to place in the Kentucky Derby this year, and how I was winning important races with them back in Kentucky. I told him that because both horses were among the best I had ever seen I had invested every cent I had, and even mortgaged my house to purchase and train them.

"And then Drew came along," I explained.

"Your husband Drew?"

"Yes, Lama Tsot." I confessed to the Lama that I'd had many men chasing me in my life, but that all they had wanted was a good time. I told him how I got really hurt twice, falling in love with charming hunks only to have them leave me when I tried to press for some kind of committment.

"Hunks, wat hunks, Daphne?"

"You know, Lama Tsot," I replied. I told him that hunks were men with muscles and strong physique but not necessarily brains. I told the Lama how I had vowed to myself that I wouldn't get close to those types again, but that Drew had been different. I told him that I could tell that Drew was really attracted to me, because, after all he had ignored our age difference and out of the blue proposed. Drew was the only fellow I had met since I was old enough to date that loved me enough to propose marriage, but that his proposal had thrown me for a loop.

"You had decide win Derby or marry Drew?"

"I thought so at first, Lama Tsot." I explained that when I told Drew I couldn't leave racing, Drew promised me that I wouldn't have to because his father would help me relocate my racing stable. I told the Lama that I had realised I could get my horses into the Derby by winning select races in California, and that Geoffrey Enderby had arranged for me to become a member of the Del Mar racing group.

"That's what has been keeping me so busy," I explained. "I'm so proud of my horses."

"Horses win, Daphne?" he asked.

"Yes, Lama Tsot," I replied. "Since you blessed my stable I've had nothing but good luck.
