“But if all that’s true,” asked Sarah, “then why do some Christian schools and churches still celebrate Halloween?”

“That’s a good question,” said Mom, “and it all goes back to hundreds of years ago with some people called the Romans. They had many religions, and church leaders thought it would be better for everyone to belong to one religion. So, they passed a new law that everyone had to join the Christian religion and if they didn’t, they would be punished.”

“What happened?” asked Jerry.

“Well, everyone joined,” said Mom. “But they didn’t want to let go of their old celebrations and traditions. When the church leaders tried to stop the celebrations, the people got angry. So, the Roman rulers moved a Christian holiday, All Saints Day, to November 1st and gave October 31st the name Halloween, which means Holy Evening. Then they told the people to pray for the dead on Halloween, instead of praying to other gods. The Romans thought that as long as the people prayed for the dead instead of praying to other gods, Halloween would become a Christian holiday. But it didn’t work, because changing the name of something doesn’t stop or change what it really is.”
