In function, the 99 works like any other pistol, with a tilting-barrel Browning lock, and many of the parts inside bear a resemblance to Glock parts. (No big deal, how many ways can you do the same job?) To take it apart for cleaning, unload the pistol and remove the magazine. Check the chamber again, then dry fire it. Do the Glock pinch, and ease the slide back, then pull down the disassembly levers on each side. Let the slide go forward off the frame. Pull the recoil spring out of its seat on the barrel, pull the barrel out and you’re done.

The magazines are double stack, but with a long taper section, and a nine-shot capacity. I’m sure the taper is to allow for a slim frame on top, where the trigger mechanism has to pass around the magazine, and not some plan to keep the capacity down under an arbitrary figure. The magazine tubes are sturdy in appearance, and the lips that hold the baseplate on are bent outwards. In the event the Assault Weapons Ban of 1994 is allowed to expire, we can after Sept 14, 2004 attach a hollow magazine extension to increase capacity past nine rounds. Adding another inch would probably get the loaded pistol capacity up to 13 or 14 rounds from the current 10.
