Those three general concepts are behind almost all databases running on servers or VMs you administer, although there are exceptions to every rule. Data files are sometimes block devices and not files at all, and they sometimes do not change, even if the database is changing. The key to getting the backups of your database right lies in understanding how your database solves these three challenges.

Please note I say “all servers or VMs you administer,” which includes databases running in VMs in the cloud, or even in servers or VMs in a colocation facility. If you have root or administrator privilege to the server, that database is using the traditional delivery model.
