Chapter 18

The click-clack of a lock awoke Vince. He stirred, only to find himself in very unfamiliar surrounds. Beige paint, old baseboards and cornices, cheap oak furniture, the warm light of a bedside lamp…

Slowly, he recalled where he was. He almost never visited Fia’s apartment in Albion, but he’d spent the night making an impression on her mattress.

He looked toward the source of the sound that woke him up. Fia stood outside, leaning away from him in little more than her underwear. The dim twilight barely illuminated her figure, but he made out her taut ass and black panties without much issue. If anything, he wished she didn’t show off outside.

“Do you always go out to smoke dressed like that?” he asked, sitting up.

Fia looked back at him, cigarette in her mouth. She raised an eyebrow at him.

Her balcony faced the inside of her apartment complex, limiting her exposure. At this time almost nobody would see her.

“I don’t smoke inside,” she said. “So, yeah, I sneak in a cig before I get dressed.” Her eyes lidded. “Thinking of railing me out here?”

“I’m thinking of who’s watching,” he said, voice gruffer than intended.

She snorted. “Settle down, V.”

When she turned around and went back to smoking, he took matters into his own hands. She’d tossed her jacket onto the ground last night. He picked it up, joined her on the balcony, and threw it over her shoulders.

Fia glowered at him. “Possessive this morning.”

He wrapped his arms around her and nestled his head into her shoulder. “You’re my girlfriend. I’m allowed to be.”

“Uh huh. Who’s cooking this morning?”

“Do you want pancakes?”

“I don’t have any eggs or pancake mix, so good luck.” She smirked at him.

“Then I’m all out of ideas,” he said.

She rolled her eyes at him and took a long puff of her cigarette. Part of him wanted to take it and steal a puff of his own, but he thought better of it.

The two of them remained there for a few minutes. Neither of them spoke a word. They simply stood together, enjoying each other’s company and absorbing their warmth.

“Do you remember something I said to you, not long after we first met? About the allure of waking up in your mate’s bed?” Fia asked.

Vince nodded, his head brushing against the side of hers.

“I was wrong,” she said.

He frowned, but remained silent. She was going somewhere with this.

“I figured it was a bigger deal to always go to you. To be yours and take in your scent, and be claimed in your bed.” She brushed her hair behind one twitching wolf ear, her face red as a cherry. “But waking up in my own bed, and your scent intermingling with mine, like you’re infiltrating my space… That’s the real deal. I know why Pola always wants you to come to her.”

Vince chuckled and pressed his nose into Fia’s cheek. She grumbled at him.

“You just have to ask,” he said. Then paused. “In fact, it might be better to ask. I’ve been getting way too carried away with training lately, and it’s too easy to just go home with Nina.
