Chapter 22

The halls of Lionetti Tower stood eerily empty tonight. Only a week out from Christmas, it got dark early. Vince found himself rocking up at 5PM to see the tower and the casino atop it lit up. Yet by the time he reached the capo bar, he’d only bumped into a couple of security thugs in the atrium.

Sure, the bar wasn’t open at this time, but he’d been invited. He’d expected to see enforcers around.

He pushed the door to the bar open and finally saw a couple of familiar ones. Lucia and another bodyguard sat by the door with tumblers of straight whiskey and cards laid out before them. They raised their glasses in greeting.

They were the only enforcers here. Every other chair and stool remained empty, save one. The lights had been dimmed, save for the golden glow from the bar’s splashback, lending a moody atmosphere. Or more accurately, one that made it clear the bar was still closed. The usually well-stocked bar had been cleaned out save for a handful of bottles of scotch.

A bartender stood behind the bar and waved at Vince, but he wasn’t paying attention to her.

Rather, he cared about the gorgeous wolfgirl sitting on the stool opposite the bar’s counter. Alessia Lionetti graced the capo bar for the first time since he’d met her, nursing an elegant crystal tumbler of amber liquid. Not quite whiskey, as it looked a touch diluted. Unlike usual, she’d added a large cube of ice to the glass. A spiral of orange peel curled along the rim of the glass and into the drink.

Unlike her spoiled sister, Alessia enjoyed her expensive scotch as intended—with only a splash of water. So whatever this was, it wasn’t straight scotch.

“Have a seat, Vince,” she said. “This meeting can be as long or as short as you like. Liz can make you something, although I’m aware it’s a bit early to drink.”

“Given the hours I work, I drink whenever I feel like it,” he said.

Or so he liked to say. Things had been eerily quiet lately and he could almost describe himself as a functioning member of society. Between the Yakuza’s assistance and the post-conference police presence, little of note had happened. His days since the meeting with Mei had been focused on training and a handful of dates with his two girlfriends.

Vince suspected today’s meeting was about to give him something to do, particularly with Christmas around the corner.

Alessia patted the stool next to her insistently, her wolf’s tail wagging. She’d worn a glittering violet gown that fell to her calves but possessed a slit that left plenty of thigh flesh on display. To say nothing of her abundant cleavage.

After taking a seat, he pointed at the mafia don’s drink. “I’ll take what she’s having.”

The bartender, Liz, nodded. “Coming right up.” She puttered over to the few remaining bottles behind her and began preparing what Vince realized was a cocktail. He should have guessed from the garnish.

“Do you know what this is?” Alessia asked, amusement in her voice.
