Brandon Peterson lived in a house on the face of a hill with a view of nothing but fields. I expected there to be a gate we needed to be buzzed in, but when we rolled onto the property, the gate was already wide open. Harper sped up a bit, not wanting to risk having it close on us. Seconds after we stepped out of the car and shut the doors, a man appeared from the side of the house.
âCan I help you?â he asked, his brow furrowed. He was a handsome man who had obviously aged well. His sandy blond hair was combed to the side, and his face was clean-shaven. He had a golden tan like someone that had just returned from a tropical vacation. His casual clothesâa pair of squeaky-clean loafers, khaki pants, and a polo shirt with an emblem on the breast pocketâlooked like it cost more than my entire closet. âYes, weâre looking for Brandon Peterson,â Harper said.
âWell, youâve found him. Is everything all right?â He looked from Harper to me and back, swirling the light-colored cocktail he was holding.
âYes, sir. Weâd just like to ask you a few questions.â
âSure. Um â¦â he looked to the house briefly and then back to Harper and me. âMy wife and I are hosting a small party this afternoon, and sheâs busy preparing. Why donât we step into the pool house?â
We followed him around the side of the house and down a small concrete path until we reached the in-ground pool. A few men were standing around laughing about something. To the left was a small house with large glass windows on all sides, and Brandon led us inside.
Over his shoulder, I spotted one of the men staring at us with a look of concern on his face. He patted one of his friends on the shoulder and hurried to join us.
âEverything okay?â he asked, opening the door just after Brandon had shut it.
âYes, fine,â Brandon said to his friend before turning to us. âThis is my best friend, Sean Whipple.â
Ah, a twofer.
Harperâs mouth twitched and I knew he was trying to hide a smile. âGreat. Weâd love to speak with you too, Mr. Whipple.â
âMe?â The man scratched at his beard. He had a similar look to Brandon, but the loafers were scruffier and the khakis and polo looked like they came from a mall department store instead of a high-end shop.
âYes, we have some questions about the Jenny Jordan murder.â Harper launched right into it.
Both menâs eyes widened, but they didnât exchange a look.
âWeâre reopening the case,â Harper explained.
âIâm not sure how we can help, sir. We told the police everything we knew back then,â Brandon said.
Sean nodded, looking back and forth between Harper and me. âWhy are you reopening the case anyway?â
âNew lead,â Harper said abruptly.
âNew lead.â Brandon repeated the words as if he was weighing them. âLike a witness or something?â
âEvidence.â
âEvidence?â I couldâve sworn Seanâs face paled.
âWell, I hope it helps you find what happened to that poor girl.
