Chapter Nine

The bell tinged against the glass front door of Invoke, interrupting a particularly intense game of Clue that I’d badgered Electra and her sister, Astra, into playing. They both divided their time working at Invoke and Peaches’ place. I’d never tell their mother, but I think they secretly preferred the bookstore since they spent most of their time lounging around and playing on their cell phones.

I looked up to see Laura Collins standing near the front door. She had done a one-eighty since the last time I’d seen her. She was back to sporting a perfectly fitted dress and pointy heels, and her hair looked freshly done.

She glanced around the store, taking in the various items on the long table near the front door and paying special attention to the dream catchers hanging in the window.

“Hi, Laura.” I pushed myself up from the couch and went to greet her.

“No cheating,” I whispered over my shoulder.

“Hey, I don’t cheat,” Electra protested.

“Not you. Astra.” I teased.

Astra’s mouth dropped open and she started to say something when her sister turned to her. “See, I told you she knows.”

“Hello, Dru.” Laura had a tight smile on her face.

“Hi. How are you?” I stopped when I reached the front of the store and leaned against the counter. It was weird seeing her in a store like mine, and I knew she couldn’t have been there as a patron.

“I’m as well as can be expected. Thank you.” She fidgeted with her purse. “This is a… an interesting business you have here.”

I chuckled. “Yeah, it is that. Among other things.”

“The reason I stopped by…” She glanced at Astra and Electra to see if they were listening, but they were still involved in a petty argument. “Joe went to see a psychic shortly before he died.”

“Yeah, you told me that.”

“I did?” She genuinely didn’t seem to remember.

“Yes, when I came by a few days after he passed. Barry was there.” I tried to jog her memory.

“Oh, yes, of course.” She waved her hand dismissively. “I remember now. Anyway, he didn’t tell me much about where he went other than her name was Madame Serena. And I was just thinking…” She glanced around the store again.

“We don’t have any psychics here, if that’s where you’re going with this.”

“Oh.” She seemed put off by my abrupt response. “I just thought if there was a place in town where I might find a psychic, well…” She let her eyes dart around the room.

“I understand, but no, we don’t have anyone who does that stuff here. No psychics or tarot readers or mediums. Nothing like that. It’s just a store.”

“I see.” She took a step backward and placed her hand on the door. “He went to see someone in Cherry Hills then.”

“He must’ve. I don’t think there’s anyone like that here in Blackwood Bay.”

“All right. The search continues then.” She let out strained laughter.

“Good luck.”

I waited until she disappeared down the street before I turned back to Astra and Electra.

“Was she
