Chapter Nine
The bell tinged against the glass front door of Invoke, interrupting a particularly intense game of Clue that Iâd badgered Electra and her sister, Astra, into playing. They both divided their time working at Invoke and Peachesâ place. Iâd never tell their mother, but I think they secretly preferred the bookstore since they spent most of their time lounging around and playing on their cell phones.
I looked up to see Laura Collins standing near the front door. She had done a one-eighty since the last time Iâd seen her. She was back to sporting a perfectly fitted dress and pointy heels, and her hair looked freshly done.
She glanced around the store, taking in the various items on the long table near the front door and paying special attention to the dream catchers hanging in the window.
âHi, Laura.â I pushed myself up from the couch and went to greet her.
âNo cheating,â I whispered over my shoulder.
âHey, I donât cheat,â Electra protested.
âNot you. Astra.â I teased.
Astraâs mouth dropped open and she started to say something when her sister turned to her. âSee, I told you she knows.â
âHello, Dru.â Laura had a tight smile on her face.
âHi. How are you?â I stopped when I reached the front of the store and leaned against the counter. It was weird seeing her in a store like mine, and I knew she couldnât have been there as a patron.
âIâm as well as can be expected. Thank you.â She fidgeted with her purse. âThis is a⦠an interesting business you have here.â
I chuckled. âYeah, it is that. Among other things.â
âThe reason I stopped byâ¦â She glanced at Astra and Electra to see if they were listening, but they were still involved in a petty argument. âJoe went to see a psychic shortly before he died.â
âYeah, you told me that.â
âI did?â She genuinely didnât seem to remember.
âYes, when I came by a few days after he passed. Barry was there.â I tried to jog her memory.
âOh, yes, of course.â She waved her hand dismissively. âI remember now. Anyway, he didnât tell me much about where he went other than her name was Madame Serena. And I was just thinkingâ¦â She glanced around the store again.
âWe donât have any psychics here, if thatâs where youâre going with this.â
âOh.â She seemed put off by my abrupt response. âI just thought if there was a place in town where I might find a psychic, wellâ¦â She let her eyes dart around the room.
âI understand, but no, we donât have anyone who does that stuff here. No psychics or tarot readers or mediums. Nothing like that. Itâs just a store.â
âI see.â She took a step backward and placed her hand on the door. âHe went to see someone in Cherry Hills then.â
âHe mustâve. I donât think thereâs anyone like that here in Blackwood Bay.â
âAll right. The search continues then.â She let out strained laughter.
âGood luck.â
I waited until she disappeared down the street before I turned back to Astra and Electra.
âWas she
