Chapter Eighteen

Sage

I move as stealthily through the house as I can, but I know it’s likely he’s watching all of us on the camera. All I can do is hope that he wants to confront me. If he manages to avoid all four of us until Mayhem is over, I don’t know what I’ll do.

I know I could pull some of my employees away from the party, but that might arouse suspicions among the guests. I’ll save that for a last resort.

I’ve already found two of my guards dead—John and Samuel—and I wonder how many more he’s killed.

I can’t wait to get my hands on him. What he doesn’t realize is that all he’s doing is building my rage, my darkness within me with every kill. Yes, I employ these men and women, but they’ve been like family to me. They’re the only family I’ve had in the last ten years.

Yes, I was the one who cut off most communication with my parents, but that didn’t make it any easier. It had taken a few years for me to really come around, but most of these people have been with me since the beginning. I pay well, and it’s a built in family. It’s hard for people to walk away from that.

And here Cary is killing them. The only thing that would piss me off more is if he came after one of my guys. Then I’d tear him limb from limb.

A door opens right in front of me, and I don’t quite get out of the way in time. The corner hits my forehead, sending a blinding pain through me as I fall to the floor.

I struggle to right myself, eyes blinking against the pain.

“I knew it was only a matter of time before you found me,” Cary says as he leans down close to my face. “So I decided I would make it easy for you. I figured out which way you were going and then settled into this room to wait for you.”

He shakes his head. “Did you really think I wouldn’t recognize you, baby girl?”

I flinch, hating his pet name and hating myself for freezing the moment I knew it was him looming over me. I have to force myself to breathe, telling myself over and over again that this isn’t ten years ago. I’m not a sixteen-year-old girl who doesn’t know how to fight back. Now, I’m a twenty-six-year-old woman who has trained for this moment.

I’ve got to get my shit together.

When I don’t answer, Cary sneers before slamming his hand into my face. “That’s fine. Be a bitch—you always were.”

Pain floods through me once more, blood spilling from my nose. I try to lift my hand to my face, but Cary grabs it and drags me into the room. The door slams shut behind us just before his foot meets my ribs again and again, and I can’t fight back my grunt of pain.

“You might have changed your hair and painted your face like this, but those eyes? I’d know them anywhere—I’d know you anywhere.
