Chapter Twenty-Four
âAre you coming or not?â Maric barked from the lift. He appeared to be waiting only for her, as Xaav had disappeared.
She really didnât want to get close to him, but refusing wouldnât do her any good. She stomped over to the lift and stood as far from him as possible.
Looking out at the forest, he had his hands tucked behind his back, and her dagger out of sight.
âGive me back my knife,â she demanded.
âMaybe later.â
âNo maybes. I need it to protect myself.â
âWhile youâre with my squadron, you wonât need protection.â
Agathe snorted. âNot reassured. How soon youâve forgotten that one of the acolytes was snatched from right under your nose. And who rescued her?â
âThe idiot who ran off alone into a dark hole with no plan.â
âNot alone. Hiix was inside.â
âAlso being foolish. You both should have waited.â
âWaiting wasnât an option.â Everyone knew that once a monster snatched, the rescue had to happen quickly.
âCharging in alone wasnât the best idea.â
âYou mean I should have let you do everything.â She snorted.
âIs it so hard for you to accept help?â
âMore like trying to understand why youâd risk yourself coming after me.â Because, logically, he only needed the so-called Blessed.
âNext time, I wonât bother.â
âGood.â And, yes, she sounded petty, but their bickering served a purpose. She no longer wanted him to kiss her.
As the lift finally lurched into motion, she veered the subject. âHow long do you think that shaft under the Abbae existed?â
âProbably a very long time.â
âWhat makes you say that? The cave only seemed recently occupied.â
âMost likely, the creature lived closer to the bottom and rarely climbed so high. But of late, the monsters havenât been acting as they should.â
An uncanny observation that mirrored hers. She hugged herself. âWhat if that shaft had gone all the way to the rim? The monsters could have spilled into Kingâs Valley without impediment.â
âItâs happened. To a little hamlet called Clay Spring.â The words emerged bleak. âWe arrived just in time to dispatch the beast and seal the fissure.â
âOh. No.â Her hand went to her mouth.
âSo you see, it has happened before, and it will happen again.â
She eyed him. âThere must be a way to stop it.â
He glanced at the forest as he said, âI donât know if we can anymore. We might have reached the point of no return.â
âSurely, there must be something you can do. Something that doesnât involve abducting young girls.â
âAnd what if I said the Blessed are the only answer?â
The very idea made her laugh. âHow do you figure? Other than the color of their eyes, theyâre not special in any way.â She wasnât about to let him know that she knew about the magic. Not when it seemed that only one child had ever been able to wield it.
âAnd thatâs where youâre wrong.â
The elevator arrived with a jolt, but Maric shifted to stand in front of her instead of getting off.
She had to look up to see his eyes. âWhat do you want?â
âWhy are you determined to hate the King?â
âI donât hate him.
